Hi everyone,
Some of you may already know that I run a wonderful group here in St Leonards/Hastings called The Jazz Singing Class — and I’m on a bit of a mission to keep it thriving for many years to come.
Now, I’ll be honest… self-promotion isn’t exactly my strong suit (I leave the trumpet blowing to Robbie R — our brilliant piano accompanist and, quite literally, a monster trumpet player). Add a dash of ADHD procrastination into the mix, and yes… I’m typically scrambling to sort promotion just before term starts. If that sounds familiar — you’re my people!
But here’s why this class matters so much to me…
Teaching has always been deeply woven into my life as a singer, songwriter and actor. Over the years, I’ve worked with incredible institutions including the Musicians Institute, ACM Guildford (where I was Head of Vocals), ICMP, and I’m currently part of the teaching team at the Guildhall School’s Jazz & Rock Summer School — alongside some of the UK’s finest musicians.
So why start The Jazz Singing Class?
About 20 years ago, after moving out of London to raise my twin daughters, I noticed something missing in the town where I was living. There weren’t many opportunities outside the city for people who loved music but couldn’t drop everything to study full-time — people with busy lives who still wanted to grow, stretch themselves, and truly understand jazz, performance, and musicianship.
So I created something for them.
And I’m incredibly proud to say… it’s still going strong 19 years later.
I still travel every week to Hertfordshire to run those original classes, where students (some of whom have been with me since the beginning!) have not only developed their musical skills, but built lasting friendships and even gone on to perform professionally.
What makes it special is simple:
It’s not just a class — it’s a community.
People from all walks of life come together — teachers, therapists, creatives, parents, retirees (and yes… even a former singing gorilla 🦍). What they share is a love of music and a desire to connect, express, and grow.
And now, I’ve brought that same model to St Leonards & Hastings.
There’s so much creative energy in this town, and I truly believe in contributing to the community you live in. That’s why I’ve worked hard to keep the class accessible — offering incredible value compared to similar London courses, including:
• Weekly live accompaniment
• Expert tuition
• And an end-of-term performance with a professional jazz trio
Most importantly, it’s a space where people build confidence, find their voice, and form real connections.
So here’s where you come in…
If anything you’ve read sparks even the tiniest bit of curiosity — get in touch.
Whether you’re:
• Someone who’s always wanted to sing
• Looking for a creative outlet
• Or thinking of giving a unique and meaningful gift (yes, vouchers are available!)
I’d love to hear from you.
Let’s keep music, creativity, and community alive here in St Leonards.
Classes take place on Mondays at Stereo Retro.
Come and swap the pebbles for something a little deeper… 🎶
All my love and good vibes,
Donna x
