Having a pet, whether it be a dog or a hamster, has many benefits for your child’s development:

• They teach your child about responsibility, will give them new chores and rules to follow. It will also teach them the importance of caring for a living thing.
• A pet will teach your child about birth, reproduction, illness and death. – the circle of life.
• They provide comfort- Animals are the greatest source of comfort, they can be your child’s best friend. No matter how your child is feeling, they may find comfort in their pet.
• They help build bonds- Pets can build family bonds. Pet chores such as walking the dog or feeding the rabbits are activities the family can carry out together.

Do you have pets at home? What's your experience with children and pets?

Bonjour! Did you know - at Clive Vale Nursery in Clive Avenue we offer French lessons on two mornings per week.
Learning a second language is in addition to the Early Years Curriculum because we know that young children are so good at imitating sounds and pronunciation and the more they enjoy learning a language when they are young, the more likely they are going to find it a positive experience when they are older.

Do you have a fussy eater - Top Tips!

It’s hard to stay positive when your child is a fussy eater. Getting a child to try new things can be a long and hard process and can also make meal times stressful. Thankfully these top tips can encourage your child to be more accepting to new tastes and make your family meal times a dream.

1. Show your enthusiasm - Express to your child how exciting tasting new food is, it lets them know that they’re doing the right thing by praising them, every time they eat something new or healthy.

2. Introduce new food in small portions - it can be very overwhelming for a fussy eater when a whole portion of new food gets put in front of them. Start with small teaspoons for them to taste or incorporate the new food into food they already know and love.

3. Make food fun - Cut fruit and veg into funny shapes or use a reward chart to motivate your child into trying new foods.

4. Let your child help with the cooking process - Let your child be a part of the food preparation process so they know exactly where the food comes from and also gives them more motivation to try the outcome of their hard work.

5. Be Patient - It takes a few tries before your child knows if they like the food. Their taste for things can also change, on day one they may hate the food but they may like it within the next month or so.

Good luck!

Bed time can be the biggest battle of the day for some families. Getting your child to stay in bed just got easier with these five tips:

1. Have a routine - decide what time is your child’s bedtime and make sure they are aware of the time as it approaches. Talk about your own routine for sleep so that your child knows sleeping is important.
2. Plan a set of activities - Activities such as reading a book, listening to soft and calming music or having a bath before bed are good to encourage a relaxed and peaceful atmosphere. Try to avoid television and computer games as these activities are more stimulating and more likely to keep your child awake.
3. Have rules - make sure your child knows that they must stay in bed after a certain time, or that only one bedtime story is permitted. This will help to develop a set routine.
4. Praise - give your child a sense of achievement the next morning by praising them. Older children can have a reward chart. Talk to them about the next day so they look forward to it.
5. Give them security - make sure your child knows they are safe, have a dim light or a night light in the room and have a toy for them to sleep with. This will help them feel safe and secure.
