Evening Knitting School with Katie Jones

Come stitch up some cosy joy on Monday evenings this autumn with knit & crochet designer Katie Jones. Whether you’re picking up needles for the first time or ready to build on the basics, Katie will guide you through it all in a relaxed, friendly small group.

Beginners will learn the essentials, from casting on to reading a pattern, & improvers can explore textured stitches, colour play & shaping. Basic yarn & materials are included.

I know, I know it might seem early for some, but I’ve already had people in asking for 2027 calendars so here they are! All from our favourite Good Tuesday

We have a selected range of spiral bound wall calendars for all tastes includijg the exciting new range in collab with The Design Museum. This year we also have the yearly wall planner as got asked a few times last year for these & I alway listen!

Good Tuesday is a lovely, small, female led stationery brand from Cornwall making beautiful calendars, diaries, planners & notebooks. They’re a certified B Corp & Living Wage employer, printing everything in England on recycled paper. We love supporting women in business & we think you’ll love their designs as much as we do!

The latest (& final) exhibition here at Bus Stop Studios is now open! Accidental Landscapes

3rd October to 30th November

Jem Sharman moved to St Leonards in 2021 and has been captivated ever since by the town’s mix of Victorian grandeur, postwar design & ever-present sea & sky. This collection of autumn landscapes captures the alchemical light these elements create together. All paintings feature well known landmarks & vistas from our beautiful town.

Though known for figurative work & portraits, Jem found his attention drawn to buildings & vistas for this show — landscapes that are, in their own way, still portraits of a place rather than its people.

This is Jem’s first solo show, following group exhibitions across Hastings & St Leonards and a Saatchi corporate show in London. He’s also co-founder & Creative Director of Millpond Press, an art & wellbeing subscription service.

Natural Yarn Dyeing Workshop with Tara Macdonald Natural Dye • by Tara Macdonald

Love yarn, colour & making something completely unique? Join Natural Dyer Tara Macdonald for a friendly, hands on day learning the basics of natural dyeing with garden botanicals.

You’ll prepare wool yarn, create dye pots & build your own rainbow of shades, choosing 2 ply for embroidery or DK for knitting & crochet. You’ll go home with a set of hand dyed mini skeins plus an instruction leaflet so you can carry on at home.

Beginner friendly, all materials included & places are limited to keep the group small. Please check our Terms & Conditions before booking.

Small announcement about the future of BSS

I’ve been finding things very hard the past fews months what with the break in, lack of support from the police, a slow down in sales & bookings, a much welcomed rent increase on top of the daily world news. Something has to change!

I feel I may have had a little bit of burn out/ minor break down and whilst away last month I came to realise that things can’t go on like this anymore if I want to stay open.

So I’ve made the difficult decision to stop organising other workshops/courses & just focus on my embroidery/stitching workshops/courses.

But don’t worry! Regular BSS tutors are still going to run workshops here but I won’t doing the admin/social media/ advertising/ customer relations! Instead bookings will go through the tutors own preferred systems.



I will be knocking down the temporary wall upstairs and making the shop bigger in the hopes to stock more of what you lovely people love & desire. Although I’m not sure how I’ll afford more stock I’m hoping the Xmas run up will help me!

It’s not been an easy decision but if I want to keep going something has to shift! For my own well being and for the future of the business

So I won’t be booking any new classes apart from my own, but there will still be a page on the website listing everything that’s running here. For now all classes on the website will run as normal & upstairs

Thanks for everyone who supports me & the shop. I’m feeling a little fragile at the moment so please forgive me if I don’t get back to your messages or emails immediately

Metal Thread: The Core Skills Embroidery Course with Becky Hogg - exclusive to Bus Stop Studios

Ever wondered how Royal coronation robes or the lavish fashions of the 17th century were embroidered? Join embroidery artist & tutor Becky Hogg for this four-part course in metal thread (goldwork) embroidery, working a sampler to learn the traditional techniques & stitches behind richly textured, stunning embroidery.

Over four Friday mornings, you'll learn:
- Specialist tools & materials
- Padding with felt & soft string for depth
- Couching, from flexible passing threads to stiffer pearl purl
- Cutwork with purl, including chipping & satin stitch
- Working with silk-covered metal threads

Perfect for complete beginners & those wanting to refine their skills. No drawing skills needed, a sampler template is provided.

A materials pack is included, with metal threads, padding, needles, beeswax & base fabric. Hoops & stands are available to borrow, or bring your own. Extra stock is available in our shop.

About the tutor
Becky Hogg is an accomplished embroidery artist & experienced tutor with a love of traditional techniques & their modern uses. Her teaching is friendly, encouraging & accessible, & she's a regular tutor at Bus Stop Studios.

We keep classes to a maximum of 6 students so everyone gets plenty of individual support, so early booking is recommended. Please check our Terms & Conditions before booking.

To keep things fair & sustainable, reduced-fee places are now limited rather than open to everyone. Accidental Landscapes
New work by Jem Sharman
3rd October to 30th November

We’re delighted to host Jem Sharman’s first solo show at Bus Stop Studios.

Jem moved to St Leonards in 2021 & is proud to call it home. He’s always been struck by the juxtaposition of grand Victorian architecture, postwar utilitarian design & the ever present shock of sea & sky, which combine to make the accidental landscapes of this collection. They capture a particular quality of autumn light, when the sun burns low in the sky & has an alchemical effect on matt surfaces, throwing mackerel silver & smuggler’s gold over stucco & concrete.

These landscapes are accidental in another way. Since he started to paint just 10 years ago, Jem has gravitated towards figurative work & portraits in particular, so he was surprised to find his attention turning to buildings & vistas. In a sense they remain portraits, albeit of a town rather than its people.

After a career delivering the creativity of others, Jem picked up a pencil & drew his first portrait in his late 40s. Charcoal followed, then acrylics, oils, ceramic tiles, lino cut & photopolymer prints. Whether it’s a portrait, landscape or still life, he’s attempting to portray the human emotion we experience all around us (& sometimes its absence). He has shown in London at a Saatchi corporate exhibition & in Hastings & St Leonards group shows from 2023 to 2026. He’s also co-founder & Creative Director of Millpond Press, a wellbeing & art monthly snail mail subscription service.

Accidental Landscapes runs from 3rd October to 30th November. Join us for the private view on Friday 2nd October, 6 to 9pm. We’d love to see you there.

Finally can share with you the behind the scenes photos of my latest embroidery commission ‘Lovers’ for Italian artist Rossella Biscotti for the Lyon Bienalle Contemporary Arts Festival in France.

The embroideries consist of 39 motifs of ears, eyes & mouths using traditional Goldwork embroidery techniques worked on 2 panels of silk from Hermes

I had an amazing team helping me including Maz Geeson, Louisa Bryan, Barbara Long & Becky Hogg
