Rooted in Whitefield – A relaxed outdoor stay and play for under 5s and their grown-ups 🌳🐝☀️☕🌿

Pop along to Old Town Hall Gardens, Whitefield for a friendly morning of nature, crafts, play, conversation and brews. There’s no need to book, it’s completely free, and you can stay for as much or as little of the session as you like.

The next session is Tuesday 8th September, 10am–11.30am, with an Autumn Equinox theme. Other session dates listed on the poster below.

Everyone is welcome – whether you go along with friends or just fancy getting out of the house and meeting some new people.

The group will be outdoors, whatever the weather, so pop on some clothes and shoes that you don’t mind getting a little wet or muddy!

Art in Whitefield is bringing a colourful new exhibition to the heart of Whitefield!

Art on a Postcard will showcase a wonderful mix of artwork, from abstracts and landscapes to pieces inspired by local life – all at the home of the world-renowned Besses o’ th’ Barn Brass Band.

📅 Opening event: Thursday 27 August, 5–8pm
📅 Exhibition: Friday 28 August – Thursday 3 September, 12–4pm daily

Another fascinating story has emerged from behind the stones at Bury Parish Church

While helping to record the historic ledger stones, a volunteer came across the memorial of Thomas Leigh Crompton (1806–1852), his first wife Ellen, and six of their children.

Curious to find out more, they began researching the family and discovered that Thomas had a particularly special connection to the church – he was once its sexton, following in the footsteps of his father.

The research has uncovered a moving story of family life, loss and a connection to the church stretching back generations.

🌳 More great progress at Bullough Park, Accrington! 🌳

The new benches are now in place around the park, providing some lovely spots to stop, take a rest and enjoy the woodland. A huge thank you to the brilliant volunteers from Woody, who made and installed them for us – they’ve done a fantastic job! 👏

The new interpretation has also been completed, helping visitors discover more about the woodland, wildlife and habitats at Bullough Park. 🌿🦋

A big thank you to Lancashire Environmental Fund, Hyndburn Borough Council and the Windfall Fund for supporting the project, and to all the partners, volunteers, schools and everyone else who has helped bring the improvements together.

Building on the work already completed, the next phase will include improvements to paths, access points, signage, boundaries and drainage, as well as a new permissive bridleway route.

Rossendale Borough Council have organised an Employment Event at The Chambers, Futures Park, Bacup, on Wednesday 30 September.

The event will bring together local employers and jobseekers, providing an opportunity to discover current vacancies, make new connections and find out more about employment, training and support available locally.

Local employers are also being invited to get involved. If your business has current vacancies or upcoming recruitment opportunities, this is a chance to meet local jobseekers, talk about the roles you have available, identify potential candidates and, where appropriate, arrange interviews.

It’s great to see the improvements at Victoria Park, Whitefield taking shape! 🌳

Work has included improvements to paths, play facilities and seating, helping to make the park a more attractive, accessible and enjoyable place for local people to spend time.

Brilliant volunteers are still hard at work at Bury Parish Church, carefully recording and numbering the historic ledger stones so that the information they contain can be preserved for the future.

And the stones are continuing to reveal fascinating glimpses into Bury’s past.

This week, we’re looking at the words people chose to remember their loved ones – and how the language used on the stones appears to have changed over time.

From “Here resteth the body…” to “Sacred to the memory…”, these inscriptions tell us much more than names and dates.

Work is progressing well, with new picnic tables and seating now installed and the wider improvements continuing across the site.

It’s great to see the plans starting to become a reality, creating more welcoming places for people to sit, spend time and enjoy the gardens. 🌿

📢 **Have your say on the future of the historic East Lancashire Railway Baron Street Workshop**

The East Lancashire Railway is asking local people, railway visitors, volunteers and anyone with an interest in Bury’s railway heritage to share their views on the future of the historic Baron Street Workshop.

This Grade II Listed building has been at the heart of railway engineering in Bury for more than 170 years – and remarkably, it is still used today to restore, repair and maintain the railway’s historic locomotives and rolling stock.

As plans for its future develop, we want to know what people value about the workshop, what makes it special and what they would like to see considered for the future.
