Back To School Tips βοΈπππ
π Get sleep back on track
If you have been more flexible with bedtime and waking up, shifting to consistent sleep patterns 1-2 weeks before school will help and ensure your little oneβs circadian rhythm is reset and ready for school.
π
Countdown 2-7 days
Children generally donβt have a great sense of time and the unknown can lead to a lack of meaning or feeling overwhelmed. Use a calendar or have a countdown available for them.
πΏ Practise the morning routine
The morning can often feel like a mad dash, so getting back into morning and evening routines can prepare children for what is to come.
π Encourage and reinforce independence
Having your children practise skills like getting dressed, packing their school bags and preapring their PE kits, can help to develop independence and executive functioning skills. Check out β they have fabulous self-care boxes for children that promote independence and encourage mindfulness.
π Be honest and let them know what will happen
Explain to your children that going back to school or starting a new school comes with many different emotions. Label these emotions and respond to them with stories of when YOU have felt these emotions. Giving your children a general idea of what will happen can help them process what the future may look like.
π Reading
Be sure to start reading consistently with your children again, a few weeks before school begins, especially if you havenβt been reading much over the break. Check out Miss Laurenβs Summer Reading Challenge for some fun reading ideas!
