Traditional education approaches KS4 maths by cramming as much information, formulae and facts into the brain. This causes those with weaker memories to falter, loose confidence and believe they can't do maths.
This is absolutely and categorically not true. Often people with low working memory or memory recall, have amazing logic and problem solving skills. By degree level, these are the skills called upon. I encourage my students to reconnect with these strengths. To listen to their gut. To stop searching for the formula and look at the problem. It turns out they can do maths. It turns out they are not as stupid as they were lead to believe. It turns out they don't need to try to be someone else.
I love my job.

I feel the same emotions I felt when my children learnt to walk or take their first steps, when my students have a breakthrough. This student was struggling to make sense of the concept of averages. She managed to put this in her own words. I was almost moved to tears.
The bravery that I witness from vulnerable and often struggling young people, who are living on the fringes of society, many of whom have been let down by their community, is so beautiful and moving.
Making a comeback is awesomely inspiring, but in the face of the adversity that today's youth are coping with, is admirable on a whole other level.
I don't need to go to Niagara falls to see brilliance.

Colour coding has been around forever. Some of us need visual stimulus to unlock memories.
Using colour, sound and imagery, my students and I are mapping pathways to topics. This creates access to filed information during unnaturally quiet times, such as during exams.

The nerdy bit:
This links into the central principle of learning and teaching: moving information from the working memory (which has very limited capacity, circa 3-7 pieces of distinct information) into long-term memory then building the ‘retrieval strength’ of that information.
When information is stored in the long term memory, it is organised into schemes (files). The more schema and more imbedded the scheme (ie the larger the number of connections in the brain) then the easier it is to store that info and the easier it is to recall it.

For example, if we both watched a program on sewing, which was very detailed and introduced new ideas or concepts to you, you would be able to store and retrieve that new information much easier than me as I have a very limited scheme on sewing.

There are many studies around information storage and retrieval. Findings suggest the senses play an important part in memory and can help strengthen retrieval.

Lots of emails being sent to new teachers. I work closely with my student's school staff, to provide a program of support that is tailored precisely to their individual needs. I update the school with adaptive methods that have worked well. I take on board methods that have helped at school and topics that teachers feel need extra support. I share all this with parents and they in turn help me to understand what engages, motivates and supports their child's learning. But most of all, I listen to the student. I ask them how a session felt to them. What worked for them. Which bits they enjoyed. What they remembered from last week. I use this to build a learning model, a safe learning space in which to grow in confidence and resilience and self awareness; which eventually leads to the ultimate goal of independence.

Daisy has been tutoring my son for 18 months leading up to his GCSE’s. My son is autistic and Daisy was able to suggest different learning methods for him to understand making school work, homework and revision more manageable.
Daisy is very reliable and punctual and is very patient when helping my son. His academic ability has vastly improved since Daisy started helping him.
I would recommend Daisy highly and would not hesitate to call on her tutoring service again if I needed it.

When we play to our strengths, and information is communicated in an accessible manor, not only does learning come alive but confidence is built.
Self belief is more than 50% of what I tutor. I work alongside my pupils. I draw diagrams. I make mistakes. I have fun. I scaffold their learning and nurture a deep rooted belief that they CAN.
Nearer their exams they sometimes slip back into old ways of self doubt and become bogged down in technicalities and facts. This makes their work wooden and full of obvious mistakes. This is when I use emotional literacy skills to help them to manifest, let go of negative thoughts and reconnect with the knowledge they have within.
Good tutors don't make kids smart. They unlock kids true potential. For me, this means self belief must be at the forefront of what I do with my pupils.
