IS THERE LIFE OFF EARTH? 🌍 (not including the ISS and Tiangong)

Our Mira’s Moon book is all about the search for life … but where are good places in the Solar System to look?

Which moon would you bet that life is hiding on … or in!?

If you want to know more, Sarah had just posted a new blog on missionastro.org/blog all about where aliens could be hiding 👾

Shocked to say the least.

My gut reaction to Artemis III crew was sadness and pure disbelief. I googled it 3 times on 3 different devices thinking it was a joke. Then I burst into tears. (A reaction that surprised even myself.)

The astronauts that NASA has selected are truly incredible and I can’t wait to see them on the mission. I’m excited for them, I’m excited for the human race.

So why was I so upset?

I understand the astronaut selection process is complex and multi-factored. But after the huge spotlight on inclusivity during Artemis II mission, I was expecting the same here. And it took me completely by surprise that I didn’t see it.

The choice was not INTENTIONAL but my fear is that it will be IMPACTFUL.

I’ll do my bit though. I’ll tell all the young girls I teach and ones that reach out to me for advice, that there is still a world out there for them to explore and that they have a chance to be in the action. I’ll explain more about the astronaut selection process to help them understand. I’ll convince them that we are not going backwards. Hopefully, in time, I will be convinced by action that we are not going backwards.

All I can say is that seeing astronauts like Christina Koch on the tv and socials during the Artemis II mission hits different than any number of space Barbie dolls.

Here’s some lessons I learnt about academia during my time as a PhD student at the Institute of Astronomy, University of Cambridge. Which ones do you agree with?

✨ The loudest aren’t always the smartest.
By my third year I could see it from a mile off.

✨ The best ideas come at ‘tea time’.
Chatting and developing ideas in a relaxed environment brought clarity and perspective. Could see the bigger picture away from my desk.

✨ Not all astronomers know their way around the sky.
This shocked me! Not all professional astronomers can point to the constellation that the objects they are studying are in. (And this is ok.)

✨ Being uniquely yourself is a superpower.
Keep being you. I wish someone would have told me that. Being you, and being comfortable to do so, brings confidence.

✨ Not all humans can deliver constructive feedback.
Listen to the facts. Ultimately, packaging doesn’t matter.

What life lessons have you learnt along your way?

The struggles of those who study pulsars 🥲🤣

Black holes have just got that mysterious vibe that’s hard to beat!

Why is Enceladus so special to astronomers?

Dr Sarah Crick explains why a little moon of Saturn is intriguing and why it’s the focus of her debut children’s picture book.

What’s your favourite moon?

How many educators out there were the ones getting told off for chatting? 🙋‍♀️🙌🫶🏻💕

Let’s all chat our students into the best grades for them and a lifelong love of learning!
