🌦️🔬 This week in our online Autumn Science Club, we investigated Wild Autumn Weather and explored how scientists observe and measure what's happening outside.

We compared the weather from our different locations, looked at temperature, rainfall, wind and cloud cover, discovered some of the tools meteorologists use and talked about how we can look for patterns over time as autumn develops. 🍂

Then came our practical challenge…

🌧️ Making our own rain gauges!

Our young scientists can now put their rain gauges outside and collect some real data before our next session.

📸 Nature Detectives - I'd LOVE to see your rain gauges in position!

Ask a grown-up to share photograph of your rain gauge once you've found the perfect place for it. Remember what we discovered – we need an open outdoor space, away from trees, roofs and anything else that could stop the rain reaching it!

Next week we're investigating Conkers, Acorns & Super Seeds!

We'll be discovering how seeds travel, carrying out some seed investigations and taking on an engineering challenge to design and test our very own flying seeds.🌬️🌱

Time to start looking out for conkers, acorns, sycamore helicopters and other interesting seeds on those autumn walks! 🍂

📢 We’re growing our tutoring team!

As Empowerment Education continues to grow, we’re looking for some lovely new people to come and work alongside us. 💛

Right now, we’re particularly looking for Primary Tutors and GCSE English Language Tutors to support our learners in Hartlepool.

This could be a brilliant opportunity for an ECT wanting to broaden their experience, a supply teacher looking for some regular additional income, or an experienced teacher who would simply like to do something a little different alongside their existing commitments.

We offer both daytime and evening work, with the flexibility to take on sessions that work around you. There may also be opportunities to work with us during the school holidays through our wider programmes.

One of the big benefits? You won’t be travelling from house to house! 🙌
Our tuition takes place from our dedicated tuition space in Hartlepool, where we have a wide range of teaching, practical and sensory resources ready to use.

Our sessions are predominantly 1:1 or small group, and relationship-building is a huge part of how we work. We support a diverse range of learners, including many children and young people who are neurodivergent, have SEND, experience anxiety around learning, or simply need a more flexible approach to education.

We’re looking for tutors who are warm, patient and able to adapt their teaching to the young person in front of them. Experience supporting SEND and neurodivergent learners is definitely valuable, but you don't need to arrive knowing everything - being open-minded, reflective and willing to learn matters just as much.

AQA Unit Award Scheme Registrations are now open!

💙 A little reminder that learning doesn’t have to look like school to be recognised.

Through our connection with North Star Learning Hub’s AQA Unit Award Scheme Centre, Empowerment learners can access opportunities to have their learning, skills, projects and interests recognised through AQA UAS ⭐

This can include learning through our online and face-to-face sessions, as well as learning happening at home and beyond Empowerment.

🌻 Look how much it’s grown! 🌻

This sunflower was planted during our Bloom & Pollinate Science Club just before the summer holidays… and look at it now! 😍

What makes us even happier is knowing how much care and attention this young person has given it at home. They’ve nurtured that tiny seed into this rather magnificent sunflower! 🌱➡️🌻 we can’t wait to see it in full bloom 🤗

A lovely reminder that learning doesn’t stop when the session ends. 💚

First session back after the summer holidays 💜

Such a lovely start to the new term, with lots of enthusiasm and some brilliant mathematical thinking!

Today we explored time conversions, using known multiplication facts to help us scale up, problem-solve and reason — making connections such as 5 × 7 = 35, so 5 weeks = 35 days.

A great example of using what we already know to tackle something new. 🧠✨

So good to be back!

Our next 7-week Science Club is here, and we're becoming Nature Detectives! 🌳🔎

Perfect for home-educated young scientists, each one-hour session combines science, nature, experiments and creativity as we investigate the amazing changes happening around us during autumn.

🍁 Across the 7 weeks we'll explore:

🌳 Tree Detectives – leaves, bark, seeds and tree identification
🍁 The Secret Colours of Leaves – including a colourful leaf experiment
🌰 Conkers, Acorns & Super Seeds – investigate seeds and design one that can fly!
🌲 The Pine Cone Mystery – can pine cones really respond to the weather?
🌧️ Wild Autumn Weather – investigate rain, wind and temperature
🦔 Surviving Winter – hibernation, migration, keeping warm and building a winter den
🍄 The Autumn Woodland Challenge – decomposition and creating our own woodland ecosystems

And this definitely isn't a sit-and-listen science class!

Each week children will be encouraged to investigate, experiment, build, test or create something alongside us – from things they can find outside such as leaves, conkers and pine cones to simple household and craft materials. 🧪✂️

Learning across the programme will contribute towards selected AQA Unit Award Scheme units, giving children the opportunity to have their learning and achievements formally recognised.

🍂✨ HELLO SEPTEMBER! ✨🍂

A new month, a new term and we’re getting ready to welcome our learners back to Empowerment Education 💙

After a slightly slower summer (although plenty of learning has still been happening behind the scenes!), our regular tuition timetable returns next week: w/c 7th September.

📚 Unless we’ve arranged something different with you, your usual tuition sessions will resume from next week.

We’re looking forward to seeing familiar faces, hearing all about the summer, and gently settling back into our learning routines.

September doesn’t have to mean pressure, huge goals or racing ahead.

For us, it’s about reconnecting, rebuilding routines, finding out where each learner is now and taking the next step from there - at their pace. 💫
