* I have been a qualified English Teacher for 5 years, and in that time I have taught AQA GCSE English Language and English Literature to students across a range of abilities (Set 1-5). I have taught An Inspector Calls, The Sign of Four, Power and Conflict Poetry and Romeo and Juliet at KS4 and Macbeth, A Christmas Carol and Animal Farm at KS3.
* I have a full, enhanced DBS check and can share the number with parents so they can verify themselves for peace of mind.
* I also do freelance work creating educational resources and content and am have completed up-to-date exam board training.
* My specialism is supporting students with SEND: Autism, ADHD and dyslexia in particular

Picking Quotations:

One thing that students frequently worry about is picking appropriate quotations to learn. The best advice is to pick quotations which are versatile and can be used for a range of different themes and characters.

An example of an effective quotation for An Inspector Calls is:

‘But just remember this. One Eva Smith has gone – but there are millions and millions and millions of Eva Smiths and John Smiths left with us’

With this quotation you can focus on the surname ‘Smith’ and discuss how it is a very common, working class surname. This coupled with the first name Eva (derived from Eve- the name of the first woman), positions Eva Smith as a kind of everywoman, and a symbol of how working class women are systemically oppressed. This is furthered by the repetition of ‘millions’, highlighting that what happened to Eva was not an isolated incident, and she was not an exception. It suggests that her experience mirrors the lived experiences of working class women. It is also clear that Priestley is evoking a sense of collective responsibility through the pronoun ‘us’- he is reminding us that everyone is responsible for supporting those less fortunate and trying to provide a message and a warning for the upper classes. Therefore this quotation can be used to answer questions about:

🚨What can you do to prevent summer learning loss in English?🚨

Summer learning loss is where students forget key concepts over the 6 weeks holiday, starting the new term in September weaker than when they left school in July. The following things are quick & easy things you can do at home (for free!) to reduce this.

For all students:
✅ Read. This is the most crucial thing parents can do to help their children. Reading together, reading independently, listening to audiobooks- it all helps. Message if you want age specific recommendations.
✅ Practice writing. Students sometimes struggle in September if they have had no reason to put pen to paper during the holiday . Engineer opportunities to write, such as writing postcards, shopping lists or diary entries.

For students going into KS4, or currently in KS4:
✅ Read or watch adaptations of all set texts. Check on your child’s school website if you don’t know what texts are studied.

✅ Read as many different examples of high quality writing as you can- don’t forget non-fiction from newspapers and current affair websites.

✅ Make time for regular writing on the topics that interest your child- both fiction and non fiction.

✅ Read back over class notes and consolidate these into revision notes so they can get off to a flying start in September

I have decided to start a business as an English Tutor to share my passion for English and the tips and tricks I have picked up during my career as an English teacher with more students.

I have worked for the last 6 years as an English Teacher and a Lead Teacher for SEND and Additional Needs at a local secondary school, a role which I absolutely loved. I have left my role as a teacher to give me the time to pursue further post-graduate study in Psychology but am still incredibly passionate about supporting students to meet their potential.

I have 3 years of exam board experience and relevant CPD pertaining to supporting learners with SEND (I have completed a Level 2 Certificate in Autism and am currently completing a Level 2 in Specific Learning Difficulties- ADHD, Dyslexia and Dyspraxia). This means I am incredibly knowledgable and passionate at supporting ALL students to meet their potential.

I offer tuition for students taking KS2 SATS, GCSEs, A Levels and undergraduate degrees.
