Safe to say, bantam Orpingtons are not beautiful at this age 😂 But they’re the sweetest small chicken in my opinion 🥰 4w old and I reckon I know which are cockerels…but too early to make a call so far though

Bluebell, asking for her peas please. She’s a year old now and becoming very friendly. I find ducks are harder to tame than chickens, they just take a little longer

It’s Hatch Day! Bantam Orpingtons. The sweetest most calm, quiet little breed, great layers and good broodies. If you’re looking for a small family pet who lays eggs, this is my top suggestion 🥰

I don’t have favourites…but this Wobbles. Just saying 🥰

Standing under this ‘pussy willow’, you could be mistaken for thinking there’s a motorbike nearby. The humming is loud! It’s absolutely covered in insects, mainly bees, making use of the early pollen and nectar it supplies. If you’re looking for a big tree that’s easy to grow and can cope with harsh soil conditions (claggy clay!), goat willow is one of the BEST for wildlife. It supports many caterpillar species, too.

Pudding, Wobbles and Dumpling make an elegant coop exit, umpired by our elderly rescue hen, Peppermint. Which is most like how you get up??

Meet Opal! Opal didn’t finish developing as quickly as her siblings, and needed help hatching, so she’s like a ‘premature’ duckling. This is why she is smaller, even her bill is tiny. She’s needed a lot of extra support and late nights to get her this far. Duck midwifery is not for the faint hearted!

We think Opal is female, this breed is usually auto-sexing at hatch, but it’s not always clear with premature ducks.

Opal because she is pale, rare, special…and bloomin’ hard to get out 😂

This time last week, the first ducklings from our own home-reared flock hatched 🥰 I feel like a grandmother 😂
