How to help your child learn their times tables.
Having instant recall of your times tables is a key mathematical skill. Multiplication facts support the learning of ratio, fractions, decimals, percentages, area, volume and some algebra skills.
My favourite tool to support times table recall is the White Rose one minute fluency app. Yes it is screen time, but one minute daily can really improve your child’s multiplication skills. One of my pupils has progressed from scoring 8 recall facts in a minute to 25! You can start with the times table facts then progress to the multiplication facts. The multiplication facts also include the corresponding division facts. Best news of all is that the app is free!

Planning your child's education
It is nearly the end of term, which means there are only a few days left of this current academic year.
Soon your child may change classes, key stages or even schools. It can take time for children to feel comfortable in their new environment and this can impact their learning.
Now is the perfect time to book tutoring sessions, thereby gifting your child all the skills and confidence they need to have a successful start in the new academic year.

How to help your child with SAT's
Next week is the Key Stage Two SAT's. These tests are rigorous, challenging and used to assess your child's progression from Key Stage One to Key Stage Two.
Top Tips to help your child:
1) Explain to your child that the tests are to assess how the school has helped them to make progress, rather than testing them.
2) Remember that secondary schools rarely use the SAT's results and will conduct their own tests in Year Seven.
3) Remind your child that they can only do their best.
4) Celebrate that the tests will all be over by Thursday lunchtime!
5) Remember you can always book tutoring sessions over the summer holidays to give your child a head start for their next academic year.
Last week I tutored a child for a session to improve their fraction reasoning skills. Within one hour they deepened their understanding and gained confidence.
Tutoring does not always have to be a long term commitment, it can just be several sessions on a particular area.

How to help your child understand fractions.
Fractions are a huge area of the Maths curriculum.
When you begin to look at fractions together, make it as practical as possible.
Fraction cubes and counters are invaluable in deepening understanding.
Remember to always link the work back to multiplication and division skills.

How to improve your child's addition vocabulary and mathematical confidence.
When you are supporting your child with their learning it is easy to use the same vocabulary in every session. Perhaps the next time you work with your child you can check which vocabulary they already know and introduce one new word to use together.
Challenge, choose one new word from the list below and use it the next time you are completing addition calculations.

Add, adding, total, more than, increase, sum, plus, and the one I need to remind myself to use, altogether.
