My name is Ben Blakey. I’ve been helping teenagers with Maths for 9 years, and founded PassMaths Ben in 2022. My job is to support and make Maths 'fun'!!

I see many students lacking confidence and motivation to get their Grade 4 to get into college.

Now the dust has settled.

Those that didn’t quite get what they needed, it’s time to maybe think of a plan.

If they need their Maths GCSE or you feel it’s something you want them to have in the pocket.

November resit window is coming up - or 2027 summer.

Happy to chat through options/my opinions with where they’re at.

Past paper practice the key to getting a pass.

Always has been, always will be.

Don’t overcomplicate it.

Parents of Maths haters.

The first battle is getting them to believe they can do it and getting them to buy into it.

They often hate it because they believe they can't do it. It's painful for them.

It's half the battle.

I have students I help twice a month, because weekly sessions would put them off Maths even more.

They're mostly in Year 7 and Year 8. (plenty of time to go before the GCSE)

PS: Last week one of my students bought a new calculator with his own money. (First lesson - 'I can't do it and it's so boring'. )

It's always a post I don't really like writing...

20th August is GCSE Results Day.

Some young people will be really happy. Some won't.

In my view, the system is f@cking stupid, backwards and can do so much damage.

Around 1 in 3 collecting their Maths GCSE will have to resit.

If that's the case, try not to panic, most colleges will not change their course.

Personally, I think there are two sensible options:

Close to a Grade 4? - If possible, resit in November rather than waiting until May.

Grade 1 or 2? - With fewer subjects and exams, and more time, waiting until the summer can often be the better option.

Last year, four of my students didn't pass in August. That was okay. They all made good progress, three passed in November, and we're waiting on the last.

It's okay, sometimes in life we have to wait to achieve things.

A result on one day doesn't tell the whole story. Sometimes a bit more time, confidence and support is the magic.

September will come and many parents will be looking for Maths help outside of school.

Never telling anyone what to do but....this video might help you think about how to approach it.

You have university students offering AMAZING support, and it's £20 an hour vs £45 an hour...

How does your child feel with the teacher and do they want to go every week/other week?

Ask for a trial is my advice - don't commit until you can see it working.

I have a confession.

I don't use fancy Maths language when it's not needed (only if it will be tested on the GCSE exam)

But what I do use is the method and tips that work for each student. And that varies from student to student.

How can we get them to college or onto the apprenticeship they need for their next chapter.

Simplicity always wins in my book.

Little quiz for those going into Y10 and 11.

Something you perhaps could ask them to attempt to get some practice in.

No time limit, just getting the brain to keep momentum with Maths.

The PlayStation and the bikes come first, but this might help someone. ❤️

PS: Happy to mark and give some feedback for free to ANYONE.

PSS: Send it via FB messenger.
