We're looking forward to the 1st session of our 𝐷𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑜𝑝𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝐹𝑙𝑢𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑦 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑀𝑢𝑙𝑡𝑖𝑝𝑙𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑅𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑜𝑛𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑎𝑡 𝐾𝑆3 Work Group.

We've got a great group of teachers due to participate, with space for a few more.

All sessions will be held at the National STEM Learning Centre in York.

It is suitable for those who want to improve their own teaching and support improvements across their department and is perfect for teachers of Year 7.

The programme focuses on developing both subject knowledge and classroom practice for teaching number across the primary years.

✔️ Explore pedagogical approaches that enhance conceptual understanding, fluency, and reasoning in number.

𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘆

Children’s chances of success are maximised if they develop deep and lasting understanding of mathematical procedures and concepts.

The phrase ‘teaching for mastery’ describes the elements of classroom practice and school organisation that combine to give pupils the best chances of mastering maths.

Achieving mastery means acquiring a solid enough understanding of the maths that’s been taught to enable pupils to move on to more advanced material.

Teaching for mastery in maths demonstrates a number of characteristics that underpin the approach.

◾️ It rejects the idea that a large proportion of people ‘just can’t do maths’.
◾️ All pupils are encouraged by the belief that by working hard at maths they can succeed.
◾️ Pupils are taught through whole-class interactive teaching, where the focus is on all working together on the same lesson content at the same time. This ensures that all can master concepts before moving to the next part of the curriculum sequence, allowing no pupil to be left behind.
◾️ Procedural fluency and conceptual understanding are developed in tandem because each supports the development of the other.

The Secondary Maths Subject Leaders Community is for secondary heads of departments and subject leaders in maths, to enhance leadership skills and improve student outcomes in mathematics.

Participants engage in workshops, collaborate with other leaders, and explore research to strengthen curriculum design and implement effective teaching approaches.

Why take part?

As a subject leader, you play a central role in shaping teaching practice and improving outcomes for students. This project gives you the chance to:
✔️ Strengthen your understanding of effective approaches to maths teaching.
✔️ Develop your leadership skills and responsibilities.
✔️ Work alongside other leaders to transform maths learning in secondary schools.

Every Year 7 classroom includes students who arrive with significant gaps in their mathematical understanding. Without targeted support, these gaps can quickly become barriers to success across the KS3 curriculum.

The Securing Foundations at Year 7 programme has been designed specifically for teachers working with students who did not meet age-related expectations at the end of primary school, particularly those in the lowest 20–30% nationally.

Whether you're new to the classroom or an experienced teacher, this fully funded programme is designed to help you close the gap and build confidence in learners transitioning from KS2 to KS3.

This high-impact CPD is completely FREE for participating schools and fully funded through the Maths Hubs Programme.

The first session takes place on 𝑇𝘩𝑢𝘳𝑠𝘥𝑎𝘺 24𝘵ℎ 𝑆𝘦𝑝𝘵𝑒𝘮𝑏𝘦𝑟 at the National STEM Learning Centre in York.
