Collaboration and networking are key skills to unlocking opportunities in STEAM careers 🥼🔭 📚🎭
In May, we welcomed local businesses, universities, and our own Careers and Apprenticeships teams to Harrogate College for our Student Progression Network Event.
The event gave students the chance to explore different career pathways, progression opportunities, and hear directly from industry professionals about the skills and experience employers are looking for.
Students also took part in a networking “Bingo” challenge, designed to build confidence, encourage conversations, and help them connect with every guest in the room.
A fantastic opportunity to inspire future next steps and develop these universally valuable employability skills.

STEM7 skills extend far beyond traditional science and maths subjects. In recent years, the concept of STEAM has gained momentum, recognising that creativity, technical expertise and innovation are just as vital within the arts 🎨📸
Our Multimedia students recently put these skills into practice through an inspiring community project with local health and social care provider, Harrogate Neighbours.
Over three days, students visited different sites in small groups to work on a live marketing brief. As well as developing their videography and photography skills, they used effective communication and collaboration to understand client needs and deliver meaningful outcomes.
Reflecting on the students' contribution, Harrogate Neighbours manager Jamie said: "You really are making a difference."
Projects like this highlight the importance of including the arts in STEM. Creativity sits at the heart of innovation, and creative subjects help students build the communication, collaboration and technical skills that employers value.

As part of our STEM7 approach, we’re helping students build the skills and behaviours employers value most alongside technical excellence. 🛠🏗
Our new £22m campus will feature state-of-the-art facilities including a digital technology suite, replica hospital ward, electric vehicle workshop and renewable energy technology centre.
Through these industry-standard learning spaces, students can develop not only specialist technical skills, but also the problem-solving, communication and teamwork behaviours valued across STEM industries.
Our partnerships with Techbuyer and Caddick Construction Limited on this project have highlighted the importance of transferable skills like communication and collaboration - qualities that are essential for success in today’s fast-moving industries.

The STEM7 skills are:
✅Flexibility
✅Communication
✅Collaboration
✅Curiosity
✅Creativity
✅Problem Solving
✅Data-driven decision making
By encouraging students to build these skills alongside within studies, we’re helping them become adaptable, confident, and ready to thrive in their chosen career path.

Our Year 1 and Year 2 Uniformed Protective Services (UPS) students recently took their learning beyond the classroom with a trip to North Yorkshire Water Park as part of their Outdoor & Adventurous Activity unit! 🌊🚣♀️
Our Year 1 land-based students took part in a range of activities including archery, zipline, climbing, and laser tag - building confidence, teamwork, and communication skills throughout the day.
Our Year 2 water-based students got stuck into raft building, paddleboarding, and the aquapark, putting their teamwork, leadership and problem-solving skills to the test in a fun and challenging environment.
It was a brilliant day for both groups, with students stepping outside their comfort zones, supporting each other, and having plenty of fun along the way.
