New publication out now šŸ“˜šŸŒ

Hidden Stories, Entangled Spaces: Contested Island Heritage and Contemporary Art Curation, edited by and Professor Karen Brown, emerges from the Transnational Island Museologies Conference (2024), co-organised by and the as part of the research project.

Inspired by Teresia Kieuea Teaiwa’s powerful idea of turning ā€œislandā€ into a verb, this volume asks what it means ā€œto islandā€ in contemporary art curation. It explores how exhibition-making today can be urgent, connected, sustainable, and grounded in care.

The book brings together contributions that trace oceanic journeys, entangled histories, and contested island heritage—revealing lesser-known transnational stories and hidden historical currents through contemporary artistic practice.

Shared Island Stories stands with the Carriacou Museum and Historical Society's Call to Action - help support Carriacou’s heritage.

As part of ongoing led Shared Island Stories research, Principal Investigator and Project Lead, Professor Karen Brown, recently visited the Carriacou Museum and Historical Society, a key site of cultural memory, heritage, and community life on the island. In the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl (July 2024), Carriacou faced devastating loss. Homes were destroyed, communities disrupted—and the island’s only museum, a guardian of history, memory, and identity, was severely damaged.

For decades, the museum has preserved:
• Oral histories of elders
• Stories of migration, resistance, and resilience
• Heritage rooted in generations of traditional knowledge and cultural practice

Now, there is an urgent and inspiring effort to rebuild, not just what was lost, but something stronger, more resilient, and future-facing.

Their vision includes:
• A hurricane-resilient museum structure
•Digitised archives to safeguard knowledge
• Spaces for youth, education, and community healing
•A renewed platform for cultural identity and sustainable futures

šŸ“¢ We encourage our networks to support and share this important initiative.

Shared Island Stories Between Scotland and the Caribbean: Past, Present, Future is a 5-year research project coordinated by the School of Art History at the University of St Andrews in Scotland that aims to investigate relationships between the archipelagos.

Drawing on history, heritage studies, sustainable development, art history and memory studies, the project asks: Which collections from the islands tell unfinished stories of Empire? What is the role of heritage communities for sustainable development? How can island community museums partner with NGOs, policy and local organisations and businesses for climate action? How can health and well-being be understood in relation to community heritage, traditional ecological knowledge and island life? What does this new knowledge bring to debates on climate justice, especially as they relate to the role of youth?
