📚 Free Chemistry Paper 1 Required Practical Support 📚

This resource is suitable for all exam boards.

It’s really important that GCSE Science students feel confident with all Required Practicals.

This is because at least 15% of the marks available per GCSE Science paper will assess Required Practicals.

This includes:
✅ Scientific concepts which underpin the method and explain the outcomes.
✅ Working Scientifically skills.
✅ Mathematical skills.

I will therefore post free content on the practicals between now and the end of November on the pinned post.

Making Pure Dry Crystals:
⭐️ A base can neutralise an acid. It is insoluble in the water produced. This is useful as you will know when all the acid has fully reacted!
⭐️ A base is either a metal oxide or a metal carbonate.
⭐️ Filter the excess base.
⭐️ The crystals or salts made are examples of ionic compounds.
⭐️ Crystallising occurring slowly will form larger crystals.
⭐️ Pat the crystals dry to ensure they are dry.

⭐️ Proud Teacher Moment! ⭐️
AQA Triple Science

Sometimes it takes perseverance.

Sometimes, it’s the second analogy which is given that allows for the penny dropping moment.

This was the case this weekend. Was a brilliant moment when it occurred!

The focus of the session was electrolysis of molten electrolytes.

We began the session looking the lack of an overall charge of atoms, and why cations and anions have charges.

With lots of I Do, We Do, You do, we were then able to move on to OIL RIG and writing ionic half equations.

We looked at the science and process behind writing:
⭐️ Ionic equations showing reduction of cations.
⭐️ Ionic equations showing the oxidation of anions to form molecules.

By the end of the tutor session, the student was able to do so independently, and is now ready to practise this further through homework exam questions.

Super proud of your perseverance, as you should be too!

🧪 GCSE Science With Professor Hannah Fry 🧪

It’s vital to think about how marks are awarded when pondering ‘how to study’ GCSE Science.

40. 40. 20.

40% of marks will assess knowledge retrieval.
40% of marks will assess application of knowledge.
20% of marks will assess data analysis and evaluation of information.

This means just sticking to a revision guide and re-writing what’s been read from memory, will likely limited the number of marks which can be awarded.

We must use other methods to access the application marks. This can include:

⭐️ Practising exam paper questions per topic using sites such as Physics Maths Tutor.
⭐️ Reading GCSE Science-relatable articles in the news.
⭐️ Reels and podcasts with GCSE Science-related content.

Here, Professor Hannah Fry explores a use of electromagnets to charge the batteries on electric vehicles.

Electromagnet Science summary:
🔋 Alternating current produces an alternating current in the wire in the road.
🔋 This causes an alternating magnetic field around the wire.
🔋 The insulated copper underneath the vehicle experiences an induced alternating potential difference across the wire.
🔋 This causes an induced alternating current.

🧪 Today’s Free Chemistry Paper 1 Required Practical Support 🧪

Here is today’s free support on a Chemistry Required Practical.

This Required Practical is for all GCSE Science students.

Electrolysis
⭐️ 2 aims: to separate and discharge the ions.
⭐️ Don’t PANIC! Positive Anode Negative Is Cathode.
⭐️ Always note if it’s molten or solution electrolyte.
⭐️ Molten: only one cation and only one anion present which can be attracted to the cathode and anode.
⭐️ Solution: H+ and metal cation present. Only Cu, Ag, and Au have priority at the cathode over H+. Halide ions have priority at the anode over OH-
