Let’s talk…TUMMY TIME 💜
What is “Tummy Time” and why is it so important??
If you’re expecting your baby or just had your baby moo, chances are you would have heard the phrase “Tummy Time”. Tummy time refers to placing your baby on their tummy for short periods of time throughout the day, but why??
Tummy time promotes the following:
👶🏻 Strengthening neck and back muscles
💜Boosting motor skills
👶🏻 Helps prevent flat head syndrome
💜 Helps tummy issues (gas/constipation)
👶🏻 Stretches and develops hip muscles
💜 Aids cognitive development
👶🏻 Improves head control
🧸How long should tummy time last?
According to experts, tummy time should start with 3-5 mins at a time, up to 2-3 times a day, gradually increasing the time and frequency (source: NHS)
🧸My baby hates tummy time 😩
It’s perfectly normal at first for babies to cry and not enjoy tummy time, make sure they are supported with a rolled up towel under their armpit and chest. Use toys, mirrors, sensory lights or simply singing and clapping infront of them to keep their attention. In time they will get more comfortable being in this position.
💜IMPORTANT 💜
❗️NEVER leave baby unattended during tummy time
❗️Clear area of any choking hazards
❗️Stop tummy time if baby throws up
❗️Keep baby awake during tummy time
❗️Don’t put baby to sleep on their tummy
