HISC Seerah session 233: Seerah Recap 10 ( #48 to #52)
#48 – Start of Final phase Dawah (Nusrah) to seek alternative base for Islam. Prophet travels secretly to Taif with Zaid but the tripartite brothers & leaders of Taif reject his invitation and after a few days he is viciously chased out of town. In shock and traumatised he prays to Allah for support.
#49 – After the Prophet’s du’a Addas brings him some grapes and becomes a Muslim; Jibreel brings the angel of the mountains but the Prophet doesn’t retaliate, and later converts some passing Jinn in the Night of Jinn.
#50 – Return from Hajj & New Study Circle venue. Recap of Seerah highlighting key aspects of the Prophet’s life to this point
#51 – Prophet get tribal protection from Mutim ibn Aadi upon entering Mecca. Overview of night journey: Washing heart – Buraq – ascending to heavens (1-Adam, 2- Isa/Yahya, 3-Yusuf, 4-Idris, 5-Haroon, 6-Musa, 7-Ibrahim) - Sidratul Muntaha - Baitul-Mahmoor – the pen – the throne – audience with Allah – 50 prayers and visions of Hell / tour of Paradise
#52 – Night journey mentioned in both Surah Isra & Najm. One night Jibreel arrives and takes him to the Kaaba and washes his heart in ZamZam again before travelling to Jerusalem on al-Buraq & leads trans-dimensional prayer of all 124K prophets.

HISC Seerah session 232: Recap9 Seerah 43 to 47 07/05/2023

HISC Seerah session 232: Seerah Recap 9 ( #43 to #47)

#43 – The Prophet overcomes wrestling supremo Ruqana after challenge and betting permitted at this stage; seasoned negotiator Utba ibn Rabiya delegated full authority by Quraish to discuss with the Prophet but failed to agree terms and was so mesmerised by revelation he encouraged the Quraish to accept the Prophet’s quest for domination.

#44 – Abu Jahal publicly announced that he would kill the Prophet and this proclamation was not challenged by anyone in the court or wider society – demonstrating the shift in public opinion – but his plan was thwarted by angels. Other delegations were send to Yathrib and then reciprocal worship compromise was also emphatically rejected by the Prophet.

#45 – Quraish innovated a new tactic of BDS (boycott, divestment and sanctions) against Banu Hashim as Abu Talib refused to hand over the Prophet to them for ex*****on (on threat of deposal as tribal chief) – thereby going against their core societal values of generosity, tribal allegiances and protection of one's own tribe at all costs. Banu Hashim endured a harsh 3 years of near starvation – a time that also severely tarnished the international reputation of Mecca and the Quraish. A non-Muslim concocted a plot to cancel the agreement publicly by recruiting a few sympathisers and the signed document was voided having been eaten by ants (as prophesised). Also discussed the hypocrisy of Western nations with their self-proclaimed core values of democracy, equality and freedom of speech being mere slogans.

#46 – Reconciliation between the tribes involved no blame. The exile took its toll on Abu Talib who became weak and was slowly dying – but he refused to accept Islam and died on the religion of Abdul Muttalib despite the Prophet pleading with him. After Ali buried him Allah forbade Muslims from asking Allah to forgive the polytheists. A good ending needs good pious friends.

#47 – Abu Lahab took over political authority of Banu Hashim as tribal chief but soon reneged on his promise to maintain the protection the Prophet enjoyed under Abu Talib. Thereafter, personal & physical attacks on the Prophet increased immensely with no tribal protection. Within a few weeks Khadija also passed away leading to further immense grief in the life of the Prophet. Their children included Qasim, Zaynab, Ruqayyah, Umm Kulthum, Fatima and Abdullah. She ranks amongst the four greatest women ever: Maryam, Khadija, Fatima & Aasiyah.

HISC Seerah session 231: Seerah Recap 8 (#39 to #42) 16/04/2023

HISC Seerah session 231: Seerah Recap 8 ( #39 to #42)

#39 - Migrants return and Uthman asked for protection then declined it before getting beaten up after heckling a poetry recital. Second Migration has over 100 Muslims and so Quraish despatch Amr bin al-Aas to court of Negus and Muslims summoned with passionate defence from Jafar ibn Abi Talib. and Surah Maryam recited – all court starts crying. Negus gives his personal protection to Muslims. Lessons: Never compromise Islam (ends do not justify the means); don’t distort Islam to please enemies; understand your audience; important to account elite to change public opinion. How to structure a talk: Start with a story, explain other side of argument, then refute it with own facts and narrative and link back to story.

#40 - Amr bin al-Aas returns accuses the Muslims of blasphemy against Jesus so Muslims summoned back to Negus but is reassured and states that this is close to his belief and sends emissaries back in disgrace. Negus thwarts the plot by his opponents to dethrone him. Negus was a secret Muslim and the Prophet prayed his Janazah-in-abstentia upon hearing of his death (a Fard Kefaiyah). Some lessons: discussing Dar-ul Islam vs Dar-ul Kufr, as citizens in a foreign land the Muslims did not preach to overthrow the regime nor cause disruption but did protect their rights through that system

#41 - Only about 40 Muslims remaining in Mecca. Abu Jahal was aggressively taunts the Prophet and Hamzah challenged to defend his nephew and tribe so marched over to Abu Jahal and smacked him in his face with his bow. Hamzah then retorted that he has become a Muslim which caused panic and later prayed to Allah to guide his heart. Meeting the Prophet he decides to genuinely convert. We should be tolerant of reasons that people convert and should support them.

#42 – Umer couldn’t find his drinking companions so decided to go to Kaaba and hides behind the cloth to sneak up on the Prophet reciting Surah Haaqa. Finally, Umer decides to look for the Prophet and kill him for a bounty but is misdirected to investigate his own sister first. In rage he accidentally hits her, calms down then reads the Qur’an before arriving at Dar-ul Arqam and he finally converts and brags to Abu Jahal and the town gossip. Umer challenges the secrecy of early Muslims despite being on the right path and convinces them to organise a public demonstration consisting of two marching columns headed by Hamzah & Umer (Prophet in the middle).

HISC Seerah session 231: Seerah Recap 8 (#39 to #42) 39 Abyssinia 3 - Jafar/NegusMigrants return and Uthman asked his business partner al-Walid ibn Mughirah for protection to re-enter Mecca, but feels guilty he...

HISC Seerah session 230: Seerah Recap 7 (#34 to #38) 09/04/2023

HISC Seerah session 230: Seerah Recap 7 ( #34 to #38)

#34 – Abu Jahl would personally attack new converts to Islam or threaten to boycott & ruin them and vowed to stamp on the Prophet’s^ neck in public; On one occasion the Prophet^ became so frustrated that he grabbed Abu Jahal’s clothes and shook him saying ‘Woe to you’ thrice; Abu Lahab rejoiced when the Prophet^ lost his son (Surah Kauthar revealed); Umaiyah bin Khalaf spreads outright lies and slander against the Prophet^; Uqba ibn Abi Muayt (who dumped camel intestines on Prophet^) also spat on the Prophet’s^ face; another enemy crushed some bones and blew them into the face of the Prophet^; often the Qur’an responds to these events directly – and the whole community understands the critique.
#35 – Abu Jahal threatened to drop a rock on the head of a praying Prophet^ when in Sajda; Uqbah ibn Abi Muayt stepped on the Prophet’s neck then tried to murder him by strangling his clothes around his neck and saved by Abu Bakr; Despite these early Muslims continued with the dawah; Quraish elite continued their dehumanisation techniques through the state machinery; Discussion of people undermining others due to jealousy, envy or not liking it when others succeed.
#36 – Years of constant dehumanisation and demonising of the Muslims by state institutions and related persecution leads to the migration to Abyssinia of 16 Muslims as the Christian Negus (called Ashama) was a just ruler; evidence of Prophet being politically astute & keeping up-to-date with international politics and current affairs; story of torturer Umer ibn Khattab wishing travellers well and migrants returned to Mecca after hearing false rumours of Quraish conversion
#37 – Satanic verses ~ brief background on the controversy surrounding Salman Rushdie’s book (a self-confessed apostate) referencing the incident upon Surah Najm revelation which culminates in the verse of prostration leading to everyone bowing prostrate. News reached Abyssinia where it was misinterpreted that Quraish had converted so they returned back to Mecca in hope. Quraish fabricated alternative explanations saying Satan outsmarted Allah & Jibreel and inserted two verses praising their idols – but his has been categorically debunked by all Muslim scholars as a fake and fabricated lie for many reasons
#38 – Abyssinia chosen for migration due to its just Christian king (understands Prophecy), tolerant society and well-travelled easy trade route through Yemen; reminder of the reason for migration was torture & fear of death despite migrants losing citizenship and all rights in Mecca; acknowledgment that this backup Muslim community stayed there for nearly 15 years only returning after Khaybar conquered in 7AH. Abu Bakr wanted to accompany Uthman to Abyssinia convinced by a friend to return to Mecca under his public protection then prayed loudly in his own home which then attracted its own audience listening outside

HISC Seerah session 229: Seerah Recap 6 (#29 to #33) 09/04/2023

HISC Seerah session 229: Seerah Recap 6 ( #29 to #33)

#29 – Ideological struggle continues with public dawah and Prophet^ attacking the predominant values and social & civilisational norms of society and the ruling elite, who send high-level delegation to Abu Talib to lean on his nephew. Despite emotional blackmail the Prophet^ rejects cessation of dawah. Abu Talib then rejects an offer of a son-swap to save face.
#30 – Next the Quraish demanded proof by miracles and also attempts at bribery or compromise: the Prophet^ refused to create rivers or move mountains and resisted turning Safa into gold as it came with an ultimatum. Despite splitting the moon at their request the Quraish still didn’t believe. He also rejected offers of wealth, kingship, women and curing of illness and remained steadfast and uncompromising.
#31 – Torture defined as inflicting physical and/or psychological pain on people and some stories include: Uthman Ibn Affan being rolled up as a carpet; Musab ibn Umair’s fierce treatment by his family; Abu Jahal torturing and killing his slaves Yasir and Sumaiyyah (first martyrs) and getting their teenage son Ammar to recant outwardly; Bilal Bin Rabaah famously shouting ‘Ahadun Ahad’ as he is being tortured; Umer bin al-Khattab used to torture his female slaves; finally Khabbab bin Arrat the blacksmith having red-hot stones placed on his back
#32 – Quraish sent a delegation to Yathrib (later Medina) to ask the Jewish elders about prophethood and any trick questions. They were told to ask him about Yusuf; and later to answer 3 specific questions about the men in the cave, the man travelled east to west, & what is ruh/spirit. The Prophet^ failed to say ‘InshaAllah’ and the response was delayed a couple of weeks in the form of Surah Kahf
#33 – Quraish sent someone to Persia to try to learn alternative stories to entice people away from Islamic stories. Abu Lahab forced his sons to divorce their wives who were the Prophet’s daughters (Rukaiiya, Umm Kulthum). People would throw pebbles & stones on the Prophet^ or thorns & garbage in his path; Uqba also threw camel intestines over the Prophet during his Sujood and he made du’a against the 7 laughing at him.

HISC Seerah session 228: Seerah Recap 4 (#24 to #28) 26/03/2023

HISC Seerah session 228: Seerah Recap 4 ( #24 to #28)

#24 – Open Dawah: Review of the Mecca timeline. Private culturing phase in Dar-ul Arqam 3 years but people aware of new message but invite only; Prophet then ordered to go public and so invites family to banquet but they leave early, next banquet Prophet invites them but Abu Lahab resists. Thirdly, he calls the tribes and people from Mount Safa and delivers warning and Abu Lahab reacts furiously – then Surah al Masad revealed

#25 – Backlash from Elites start: Mecca elite perceived Muslims as existential threat despite being very tolerant trading society so started campaign of distorting the message, lying, direct challenging of Prophet for miracles (like creating wealth, moving mountains or rivers, going to heaven); Mecca was a tribal society that still believed in Allah but powerful ruling elite were enjoying benefits, power, wealth and afraid to lose power. Prophet would directly and openly target and criticise social values of society, their corrupt economic system, materialism and beliefs

#26 - Quraish elite set up a think tank to counter the Prophet and develop propaganda strategy and deciding on type of accusations to discredit the Prophet; (Living) Miracle of the Quran as it excels in poetry, grammar/syntax, meaning and supersedes the laws of the Arabic language which the Quraish prided themselves in; People were mesmerised by the Quran so the Quraish would shout over the recitation and then banned the Prophet from public recitation; Ibn Masood volunteers to recite in public but is severely beaten; the Prophet would then recite loudly from his home at night during Tahajjud and the Quraish would secretly listen; Abu Jahal reveals the competitive tribal reason he opposes the Prophet as he is from Banu Makhzum

#27 - Next stage of propaganda is making fun / mocking / belittling and bullying the Prophet saying things like ‘couldn't Allah choose a rich person’, falsely accusing the Prophet of cursing and ridiculing their forefathers and their gods, his followers are mainly poor, he is not a high nobleman from Mecca or Taif

#28 - Continuation of ideological struggle with the misdirection and character assassination by Quraish with mocking of the Prophet & followers and other aspects of the call, no direct refutation of the message, moving to outright lies and slander and trying to discredit through insinuation. Quraish convened a think tank to come up with viable propaganda strategy for slander & discrediting through normalisation of hate (dehumanising the enemy) – example of camel innards thrown on the Prophet; al-Walid ibn Mughira rejects the think tank proposals and investigates himself and first praises the Quran before a high-level delegation despatched to change his mind and the only plausible spin was to say the Prophet has a special magic that tears families apart; in public Abu Jahal follows the Prophet and tells his audience his nephew is mad, a doctor tries to heal the Prophet and becomes Muslim like At-Tufail Ibn Amr ad-Dawsi who put cotton in his ears.

HISC Seerah session 227: Seerah Recap 4 (#19 to #23) 12/03/2023

HISC Seerah session 227: Seerah Recap 4 ( #19 to #23)

#19 – Before revelation the Prophet^ had 6 months of true dreams (visions that come true) and rocks & trees would give him ‘Salaam’; on a Monday night in Ramadhan during a period of solitude in a cave on Mount Noor he saw Jibreel who then said ‘IQRA’ and squeezed the Prophet^ thrice before revelation; thereupon he ran home in panic & fear and asked Khadija to cover him up; first revelation reinforces importance knowledge / reading / learning

#20 – after reassurance Khadija sought advice from Waraqa bin Naufil who predicted Prophethood and exile; Early converts were Khadija, Waraqa, Abu Bakr, Ali & Zayd. 7 ways revelation would happen: 1 - True dreams; 2 - Whispering / inspiration from the angels; 3 - speaking to them directly in human form; 4 - Jibreel communicates like a ringing bell with the Prophet^ in a 'trance'; 5 – Prophet saw Jibreel in his original angelic form; 6 - Allah inspired / speaks directly on earth without angels intermediary; 7 - Allah's direct speech in His presence (al-Isra wal-Miraj)

#21 – Khadija is one of the 4 greatest women ever (Maryam, Khadija, Aasiya & Fatima); After ‘IQRA’ the Prophet^ stopped getting revelation between 40 days to few months and fell into a sort of depression; then he sees Jibreel again and panics and runs home; Jibreel follows and 2nd & 3rd revelations implore the Prophet ‘You who wraps himself [in clothing]. Arise [to pray] the night, except for a little’ [ Surah Muzzammil ] & ‘You who covers himself [with a garment]. Arise and warn.’ [ Surah Muddaththir ]. So what you learn, you have to teach; Explored the difference between Nabi vs Rasul (124,000 Prophet vs 310+ Messenger) where a Nabi informs / preaches whereas a Rasul (higher) is sent to a people that do not believe in him.

#22 – the phases of The Call = Meccan phase (13 years) with ~ 300 Emigrants followed by Medinan phase (10 years) ~ 150K followers; 3 stages in Mecca: 3-yr of private Dawah, then public / open preaching, then final 3 years seeking physical support to establish Islam (Nusrah) as a way of life through allegiance of the people with power and influence; Early Converts all introduced to the Prophetˆ by Abu Bakr included: Saad ibn abi Waqqas, Uthman ibn Affan, Zubair ibn Awwam, Abdur Rahman ibn Awf, Abdullah ibn Masud

#23 – Other early converts (many slaves) including Bilal ibn Rabah al-Habashi (muezzin), (Zayd ibn Harithah), (Salman al-Farsi), Khabbab ibn al-Aratt (tortured), Suhaib ibn Sinan, Ammar ibn Yasir and his mother Sumayyah bint Khayyat (first martyr) and father Yasir (martyred), Abdullah ibn Masud (hadith narrator), Abu Hudhayfah ibn Utbah (warrior); reasons why Dar-ul Arqam was used as a base for private dawah and Halaqas; early prayer was twice daily and optional.

HISC Seerah session 226: Seerah Recap 3 ( #15 to #18)

#15: Debunking the story of Buhaira the Christian Monk as a likely fabrication; In his youth the Prophet was a poor & uneducated (unskilled) orphan, so not schooled for nobility and forced to take low paid unskilled jobs like being a shepherd of sheep; Virtues of shepherding include: time to think / reflect, learn transferable skills from taking care of flock of sheep to taking care of people / nations, leadership and values of protection/humility/humbleness/mercy

#16: As youth noble but poor and marginalised in society (as orphan), independent and reliant upon Allah; at 15 y-o helped in the Fijjar wars; at 23 y-o witnessed the signing of the Hilf-al Fudool treaty by Quraish to uphold justice after al-Aas wronged a traveller for Hajj; highlights the importance of social justice and citizenry (like raising money for homeless & marginalised in our society)

#17: at 25 y-o Haala (elder sister of Khadija) hires the Prophet for shepherding and is impressed by him; Khadija had divorced, remarried and widowed (with abundant wealth after 2nd time) became richest lady in Mecca and hired Prophet for a business trip to Syria which was blessed with abundant riches due to his honesty and trade acumen (and Baraka from Allah); Khadija then enquired about his marriage eligibility and they got married soon after by Abu Talib as he was aged 25 and she 28 (or 40)

#18: Zayd ibn Harithah gifted to Prophet by Khadija on their wedding, after he was kidnapped by his tribe and sold into slavery in an inter-tribal dispute; Zayd’s father Harithah tracks down Zayd and visits the Prophet to buy him back but the Prophet leaves the decision to Zayd – who opts to stay a slave with the Prophet rather than free and return home; thereafter the Prophet frees him and adopts him publicly; The Kaaba was built as the first house for worship to Allah by Adam and then Ibrahim / Ismail originally rectangular, 2 doors, windows and a low roof was then structurally damaged by a fire and later more severely weakened by a flood; Quraish have to rebuild it to maintain their pre-eminence & prestige and buy some shipwrecked stone / wood and rebuild it near cube-sized, taller, only 1 raised door, no windows and proper roof with drainage; Al-Walid ibn Mughirah is the first to start its demolition and war nearly breaks out to decide the honour of replacing the Black Stone which the Prophet orchestrates with each tribal chief contributing but himself actually replacing it.

#8 – Abraha becomes ruler of Yemen and builds a church to compete with the Kaaba, but it gets besmeared with excrement so he marches with 60,000 to destroy it, but his elephant stops and then the army is pelted by birds some weeks before the Prophet^ is born

#9 – Idolatry starts in the time of Nuh, but Chief of Khuzaa Amr bin Luhai is the first to bring an idol (Hubal) to the Kaaba following a trip to Syria

#10 – Hashim becomes a legend after starting new trade routes (Rihlat al-Sh*taai wal-Soif), and his son Abdul Muttalib becomes another legend, lives a long age and has many children (including Abdullah, Abu Talib, Abbas, Hamzah & Abu Lahab), and promised to sacrifice his 10th son (Abdullah) but was convinced not to. Arabs lived in a bipolar world but had some fine qualities that prepared them for leadership

#11 – 4 Meccans refused idolatry and made a pact to search for the religion of Ibrahim (Hunafaa): Waraqa ibn Nawfal who advised the Prophet^ upon revelation; Ubaydillah ibn Jahsh who became Christian then Muslim and migrated to Abyssinia before apostatising back; Uthman ibn al-Huwairith ended up in Caesar’s Palace; Zayd ibn Amr ibn Nufayl returned to Mecca and tried to live a pure life, known for adopting girls that were going to be killed; Also Salman al-Farsi’s journey from fire worshipper to Christian to slve to Islam in Medina

#12 – Biblical predictions of Prophethood that Heraclius knew about. Story of Hashim marrying from Yathrib and his son then coaxed back to Mecca to be known as Abdul Muttalib – who rediscovers Zam Zam, meets Abraha and marries his son Abdullah to Amina

#13 – More Biblical predictions from Isaiah, Deuteronomy and the New Testament all explicitly predicting the Prophet and his major life events. Prophet^ born at noon on a Monday in Rabi-ul Awwal, and a light shone to Syria and Thuwaiba announced his birth in the streets and set free by Abu Lahab

#14 – Halima from Banu Saad bin Bakr came to Mecca looking to foster nurse a child and eventually took Muhammed despite him being an orphan and miracles / blessings soon followed, so she extended her care but when he was 4 Jibreel opened his chest and washed his heart – thereafter the child returned to Amina; She took him to Yathrib to meet family when he was 6 and then died – later the Prophet^ visited her grave crying; Abdul Muttalib takes care young Muhammed until he died when the Prophet was 8 years old

HISC Seerah session 223: Burial of the Prophet^

The Prophet^ passed away early Monday and then late into Monday night discussions concluded with Abu Bakr being chosen as the first Khalifah of the Muslims by consensus (Ijma-as-Sahabah) which underlines the importance of a unified political leadership for all Muslims that they prioritised this over burial of the Rasool; At Fajr on Tuesday Umer addressed the Muslims in the masjid to apologise for his behaviour and to ask everyone to pledge allegiance (BAYAH) to Abu Bakr as Khalife; Abu Bakr gave a short but powerful inauguration speech; the family of the Prophet had been with the body of Rasool during this time including Ali, al-Abbas & 2 sons, Ussamah bin Zaid & others who washed him fully clothed and dug his grave on the spot where he passed away; no formal unitary janazah prayer but everyone prayed individually in groups of ten throughout Tuesday and into Wednesday evening; starting with his family, then Muhajir, then Ansar, then women, then the youth; a sense of depression and despair overtook many as part of their grief; a brief discussion about the origins of the Shi’a / Sunni political then religious disagreements; final thanks to Allah for allowing me to complete the Seerah a second time.
