Decolonising my pedagogy:

"Speech Quality"

How useful is this term? The Estillian use (in most drama schools in the UK) is wanting M1/Modal registration when asking for this quality.

In my travels around the globe, more cultures, languages and communities DON'T use a solid M1 when they are using their normal speech!

What we are seeking with the word is a white American speech aesthetic. So is it wholly appropriate as a teaching tool for our diverse singers?

Its super tiresome having students feel they are less able, simply because teachers are asking for Speech Quality and not qualifying how the student speaks, and often completely invalidating the sounds (and therefore the words) non-white or non-European or non-American individuals use to express themselves!

Is it time to retire this term?
