CULTURE 26 — SESSION FOUR: THE GATEHOUSE CUP
For our fourth Culture 26 adventure, we headed to The Castle at Halton — a wonderfully atmospheric setting overlooking the remains of Halton Castle and a perfect home for a story about judgement, truth, trust and who gets to belong.
Our latest group of adventurers arrived at the Gatehouse Cup, a warm and busy tavern where, at first glance, everything seemed perfectly welcoming.
It didn't take long for them to realise that something was wrong.
Four people had gradually found themselves pushed to the edges of the tavern — denied a cup, a place across the threshold, recognition for their own words, or even the chance to finish speaking.
Each had made mistakes.
But were those mistakes really the whole story?
As the party spoke to the people around the tavern, they began uncovering missing pieces: acts of repair that had been forgotten, consequences already accepted, motives deliberately stripped away and stories repeated so often that incomplete versions had become accepted as fact.
And somewhere amongst it all were two more servants of the Eightfold Silence…
What followed was our most socially driven Culture 26 session so far, as the players had to decide not simply who was right or wrong, but what fair consequences, trust and genuine restoration might actually look like.
Eventually, the Gatehouse Cup's corrupted hospitality became something far more dangerous.
The tavern itself turned against them.
House rules became weapons. Accusations grew larger than the people they described. And the party found themselves battling the Devouring Welcome — a place that had twisted hospitality into something controlling, conditional and ultimately hungry.
But the fourth Relic-Note could not be found simply by defeating an enemy.
It answered when people chose to make room for one another again.
When complete stories were heard.
When trust could exist alongside reasonable boundaries.
When nobody was reduced forever to the worst thing they had done.
✨ The fourth Relic-Note had answered:
THE SHARED TABLE.
And when its immense circle of light finally faded from the Gatehouse Cup, one small piece remained behind — a final portion deliberately kept for somebody who had not yet arrived.
THE LAST MEASURE.
Four answers have now been found.
Sanctuary — The Founding Bell
Transformation — The Unfurling Wing
Connection — The Connecting Wake
Belonging — The Shared Table
Three Relic-Notes remain.
And the Eightfold Silence is still searching for them too.
A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for another brilliant Culture 26 session, and to The Castle for allowing us to bring this chapter of the adventure into such an appropriate real-world setting.
