Sleep is probably one of the most underrated areas of our overall health. We concern ourselves with losing weight and getting more exercise but quite rarely do we consider the benefits of a good sleep routine. Poor sleep patterns and insomnia are shown to have a detrimental impact on all areas of health including weight gain, increased risk of diabetes, poor cognition and higher risk of anxiety. But what are the impacts of a good sleep routine? Adults who get at least 7 hours of sleep a night benefit from increased mental performance during the day, better weight management and regulation, more energy and lower risk of conditions such as heart disease and diabetes.
To help improve your sleep, consider implementing an evening routine to help you unwind so that by the time you get into bed, you feel relaxed and ready to sleep.
Things you can consider include:
A warm (not hot) bath or shower before bed
Try to go to bed at the same time every night
No heavy meals before bed - digestion is a lot of hard work!
Try to eliminate caffeine after midday
Reduce alcohol consumption - contrary to popular belief, alcohol actually disrupts sleep patterns (3am wake up anyone!?)
Make sure your bedroom is cool and dark
Read, or perhaps listen to music or even a sleep story or mediation. Blue light from the TV or devices will keep your brain stimulated. If you read on your phone or device, ensure the 'night mode' is activated.
Journalling or writing a diary. Clearing your head of the events of the day will help you to relax and give your brain some space. Writing down three good things that happened during your day also helps you to finish the day on a positive note.
As with any routine, consistency is key so try and carve out the time to do this every day - you will soon feel the benefits.
