ACTIVE ACTIVITY EXAMPLE
I consistently incorporate active elements into my sessions, utilising activities in a variety of ways. These activities can serve as a follow-up to specific focus areas, a review of content from previous sessions, or as a brain break during the session. They are especially beneficial for children who tend to fidget or need breaks to help them stay focused and on task. Children enjoy these activities, as they allow for movement while learning, which enhances their engagement and supports their overall learning process.

Young children can commonly read 'dog' as 'bog' or write 'dat' for 'bat' and a rubber duck can help explain why! 🐥🐤 We live in a 3D world and children are born with a skill called mirror invariance. This is a natural property of the visual system. Our brains are wired to recognise a 3D object whatever way it is facing. The object does not change, it remains the same object. The duck is still a duck if we see it facing left, right, upside down or from above. Children's brains want to apply this to alphabetical letters too. However, letters are two dimensional. A line and curve that we know creates a 'b', for example, changes when it is flipped and placed upside down. The shape is the same but the sound it represents is different depending on its direction and position. b d p q Children need explicit instruction to help overcome this and understand that the direction of this 2D shape matters. The letter does not remain the same every way we look at it; the shape produces a different sound if facing left, right and upside down. Children need lots of practice with the shapes and their corresponding sounds until they can identify and differentiate them automatically.
