BPM vs MPH
As a drummer, one of the most important things you need to think about is tempo and timing.
A difference of just a few BPM can completely change how a song feels.
That tiny increase might make a complex guitar riff suddenly feel rushed and uncomfortable… or make it difficult for a vocalist to fit a lyric-heavy phrase into a chorus naturally.
People often underestimate how big a small tempo change really is.
Think about it like this:
Imagine you and a friend are driving for one hour. You drive at 30mph.Your friend drives at 33mph.
After just one hour, you’re already 3 miles apart.
That’s the effect a small difference can have over time.
Tempo works exactly the same way in music.
A few BPM might seem insignificant at first, but across an entire song it can dramatically affect the groove, feel, energy, and performance of everyone in the band.
Great drummers don’t just keep time. They understand how time FEELS.

GET OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE.
If every groove, fill, and idea you play as a drummer works perfectly every time… you’re probably playing it safe.
Growth doesn’t happen inside the comfort zone.
The best players in the world became great because they spent years pushing into areas that felt awkward, uncomfortable, and unfamiliar. They tried things they couldn’t yet do. They failed. Repeatedly.
Then something powerful happens:The things that once felt impossible become comfortable.
Your comfort zone grows.
And once it grows, the process starts again.
Over many years — even decades — that zone becomes so large that very little feels intimidating anymore. That’s the ultimate goal as a musician: not avoiding challenges, but becoming the kind of player who can handle them.
So play the difficult pattern.Learn the style that scares you.Take the gig that stretches you.Push beyond what feels safe.
That’s where real growth lives.

Every professional can play --that's the easiest thing in the world. It's the listening that makes or breaks a pro in the world of music. Listening. Not the playing. High level playing is the result of listening.
