BISC Field School in Archaeology The adventures of faculty, partners, research fellows, and students attending the Bader International Study Centre’s Field School in British Archaeology.

This page provides updates and information on the adventures of faculty, partners, research fellows, and students involved in the summer field school in British Archaeology through the Bader International Study Centre (BISC) at Herstmonceux Castle. Students participate in classes on Roman and Medieval Britain, and contribute to the excavation of medieval archeological sites on the Herstmonceux est

ate. The research being conducted through the field school is generously supported through the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) of Canada, through a partnership development grant with Queen’s University, University of Waterloo, St. Jerome’s University, and the BISC.

Did you know that a part of our current mission is to find evidence of Medieval Climate Change on the Herstmonceux estate? As a component of our Partnership Development Grant with Queen’s University, University of Waterloo, St. Jerome’s University and the BISC we are hoping to determine how medieval peoples dealt with Climate Change. It has been a long but exciting first day! The students, staff and faculty of the BISC Archaeology Field School have made significant headway in our two current excavations and the surveying of our future site. The find of the day though, goes to Kate who excavated a portion of a brick structure in her 1x1 meter test pit!
