Got a lovely 1000-litre bag full of fine sandy topsoil from delivered to top up my large raised planter. I will be removing the top layer of very fertile compost in the planter before shoveling in the topsoil, then topping with the rich compost.
This bag of topsoil has low fertility and will be used to grow carrots in tubs. I read that carrots prefer low-fertility soil!

I've had an amazing pumpkin harvest this year. 😃 Inspite of colder weather now, some of the plants are still flowering and making fruit!
Viva los pumpkins 🎃

I've made Mexican tangy green tomato chili with beef.
Absolutely delicious. Served with sides of chopped purple spring onions, mashed avocado, grated cheddar cheese, sour cream, sliced jalapeño peppers, chopped coriander (cilantro) leaves. Heavenly on a cold winter's night!
Here is the recipe:
It's a tangy twist on classic beef chili. Green tomatoes are swapped for traditional ripe red tomatoes then combined with ground beef, pinto beans ( I used a can of black beans. Do reduce the water), and poblano peppers (used homegrown yellow bonnets) for an irresistible chili recipe that uses us all of the green tomatoes still in the garden come fall. (It tasted super spicy, so I added a can chopped plum tomatoes, also a small can corn).
Hearty comfort food!

Ingredients
1/4 cup olive oil
1 large white onion, diced
• 3 cloves garlic, minced
• 2 poblano peppers, seeded and diced
• 2 jalapeños, seeded and diced (you can leave seeds in if you like things spicy)
• 1 pound ground beef
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 tablespoon ground cumin
1 tablespoon dried oregano
2 teaspoons smoked paprika
2 teaspoons ground coriander
1 pound dry pinto beans, soaked overnight, drained and rinsed
3 large green tomatoes, diced (or 12 ounces smaller ones)
4 cups chicken broth, stock or water half this if using canned beans)
• 1 tablespoon rock salt

1 bunch coriander (cilantro), leaves and tender stems chopped & sides as described above.
Optional: Serve with rice or tacos.

See cooking instructions on photo.

I have plenty of green tomatoes who were just not going to do anything if left on the vines now. Lately, we've had lots of rain resulting in blackened plant stems, and mould is stepping in...
I've picked the lot. Left the better ones in a tray with ripe tomatoes, and they're beginning to go reddish.
I've found a Mexican recipe to use the rest.Looks like this is going to be a winner!
Recipe in next post.

Such joy growing your own, but it is unfortunately also a battle with nature.

The most successful plants growing in my raised planter weren't even sown by me!

I got a whole lot of rotted horse manure and had worked it into the soil mix in my raised planter. Was truly intrigued to see these huge leaves emerging... turns out to be a big crop of different pumpkins.
I initially thought they were round courgettes and had been picking them the minute they got to a good 'courgette-size'. I was then urged to let them grow on, see what happens. Well, as you can see, they're now busy turning yellow and others orange, some with smooth skin, some bobbly.
They must've fed their horses loads of pumpkin to have so many 🎃 seeds in the manure!

Very pleased with the beautiful crop of different tomatoes growing too.

I've had to resort to covering the cabbage in a fine mesh to prevent the many hovering cabbage butterflies from laying their eggs. Drastic measures when you also want some cabbage to eat!

Snails and slugs were very abundant this wet year. Every night I had to go out with my head torch to remove the blighters, else there would be nothing left for us. I've tried various organic applications, but the copious rain just washed it all away.

Amazing crop of weird very large round courgettes with pale yellow flesh. Unexpected plants started growing amongst the veg I planted in our raised planter. Going to make loads of my fave, courgette and mint soup, for the freezer. Yumm!

Grand satisfaction of growing our own. 2mx1m wide, 80cm deep metal raised bed.
Growing lots of different veg, including some mystery pumpkin or melon plants, courtesy, it seems, of the well-rotted horse manure application. Intrigued to see the eventual fruits, to find out what they are!
