❤️ Love started at Surrey

We're delighted to celebrate the love story of Surrey alumni Dr Xin Yang (PhD Electronic Engineering, 2019) and Yan Zhu (BSc International Events Management, 2020, who will be getting married next week. Although they arrived in Guildford years apart as international students, their journeys eventually crossed at the University of Surrey, where they both immersed themselves in university life, both serving as Presidents of the Chinese Society and making lifelong memories on campus as Students’ Union reps and Student Ambassadors.
Now, the place where their story began has become part of a new chapter as they prepare to say "I do".

The alumni team recently joined the University of Surrey’s Beekeeping project to help harvest honey from the campus hives 🍯

Working alongside staff volunteers and students in the Lakeside Restaurant kitchen, members of the alumni team helped slice wax from the frames, place them into the honey extractor, filter the honey and jar it ready for sale.

The extractor was funded through the Forever Surrey Fund, and proceeds from the honey sales help keep the project going. As well as supporting biodiversity on campus, the project creates valuable research opportunities for PhD students at the University.

It’s a wonderful example of how donations can support practical, high-impact initiatives across campus.

We were delighted to welcome University of Surrey alumna Dr Nicky Fox back to campus on 15 July 2026 to receive an honorary doctorate from the University 🎓

Nicky, who graduated from Surrey with an MSc in Telematics and Satellite Communications in 1991, is now Associate Administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, leading more than 100 missions exploring Earth, the Sun, the planets and the wider universe.

During her visit, we made sure Nicky finally met herself - the “Proud to be Surrey” billboard featuring her on campus. It’s a familiar sight to our students and staff, and one she is often sent photos of, but this was the first time she had seen it in person.

Speaking to graduates, Nicky reflected on the confidence, friendships and teamwork she found at Surrey, and encouraged students to embrace curiosity and perseverance.

Congratulations, Nicky - we are incredibly proud to celebrate you as a Surrey alumna and Honorary Graduate 💙🦌
