Our undergraduate tourism students went to Kenya 🌍

A trip designed to give them experience firsthand about what goes into providing quality, culturally immersive tours that benefit local communities.

They went on a safari, learnt about conservation and sustainable tourism, stayed in a Maasai village, supported community initiatives, and heard directly from guides about the challenges facing local people and Kenya’s tourism industry.

“It is safe to say that it was one of the most eye-opening experiences of my academic journey so far.”

Special thanks to Amaya for capturing the wonderful memories 👏

🌍 🌿 A wonderful day at Stonehenge

Yesterday we took our UG and PG students from Visitor Attraction Management to Stonehenge to learn directly in the field from industry experts.
What made the visit especially valuable was being received by the site’s managing team, who generously walked us through their operations and strategic decisions. Hearing directly how they manage timed entry, visitor flow, conservation responsibilities and commercial sustainability gave students a rare glimpse into the realities behind an iconic heritage attraction.
Standing in front of the stones is always powerful. But understanding the invisible systems behind the experience — the coordination, the constraints, the daily operational choices — is what truly brings Visitor Attraction Management to life.

Very proud of the curiosity, energy and thoughtful engagement of our students throughout. 💛

Thank you to Sophie and her team at English Heritage for hosting us. You truly made this a perfect learning opportunity for our students.

This week’s Academic Weekly Digest explores a question many organisations are quietly facing: 👉 Is quiet quitting really an individual choice — or does it spread through workplace networks? Eden Jiao and Yitong Yu apply spatial econometric methods to examine how disengagement diffuses within hotel organisations. Their findings are striking:

• Quiet quitting is socially transmitted through workplace ties
• Abusive supervision cascades widely across organisational networks
• Burnout spreads more subtly, but still amplifies disengagement
• Ignoring social interactions leads organisations to underestimate the scale of the problem

By moving beyond individual-level explanations, this research shows how employee behaviours travel through departments, shared locations, and even hotel-provided accommodation. A timely methodological and theoretical contribution to hospitality and organisational research.

Kicking off our MSc February cohort with an evening of good conversation, free pizza, and plenty of questions. 🍕✨

From thoughtful Q&A moments to the tradition of our pineapple pin distribution, it was the perfect way to begin building this year’s SHTM community. Each new cohort brings its own energy, curiosity, and ambition, and we are excited to see how this group will shape the months ahead.

Here’s to new connections, shared learning, and the journey ahead. Welcome to SHTM. 🍍

This week’s Digest features new research by Dr Qiu and colleagues that rethinks how s*x, intimacy, and relationships are understood in tourism. Tourism research has often framed s*x through a narrow lens of deviance or commercial exchange. This study moves beyond that binary by examining s*xual non-monogamy among q***r men using Grindr while travelling, based on 26 in-depth interviews.

The findings show how mobility, anonymity, and digital platforms enable extradyadic s*xual encounters to function as a form of touristic leisure. By distinguishing between monogamish and open relationship arrangements, the paper shows how intimacy, wellbeing, risk, and relational ethics are actively negotiated during travel. Rather than treating s*xual non-monogamy as transgressive, it reframes extradyadic s*x as an ordinary, digitally mediated form of touristic leisure, expanding how tourism scholarship understands intimacy and pleasure.
