🌳 Supportive learning—in theory and in practice.

“I’m having such a brilliant time and learning so much. I was worried about all the theory work, but I’m a lot less stressed now with all the guidance I’ve received. We have spoken about a lot in detail and done lots of fun activities.”

🌿 Four weeks into their Forest School Leader Training journey…

“I feel so much calmer and more relaxed about the whole Forest School course now and much more at ease with it all. Today’s session was brilliant, and I’m really starting to enjoy it. I’ve also realised I’ve learnt quite a bit about myself as a learner through the course so far, which has been really interesting!”

🌿 Forest School Leader Training - Week Four

We’re officially halfway through the course - and what a varied week it was!

Our trainees brought along healthy snacks to prepare and cook for the group, tried their hand at Nordic braiding and made friendship bracelets.

There was plenty of practical learning too, with trainees teaching and supporting one another as they used tools to make wooden mallets and butter knives. We also explored the many different “hats” a Forest School Leader needs to wear - from facilitator and observer to risk assessor, environmentalist and confidence builder.

Four weeks completed, four still to come - and it’s wonderful to see everyone’s skills, confidence and connections growing week by week. 🌳

🌿 WEEK THREE: GETTING HANDS-ON! 🌿

Week Three of our Forest School Leader Training was all about developing practical skills - and putting them to use in the woodland.

Our trainees practised:

🪢 Tying and using essential knots
⛺ Creating secure woodland shelters
🪚 Using tools safely and confidently
🪵 Cutting, splitting and preparing wood
🔥 Using a Kelly kettle for that all-important woodland brew

It was a day of learning by doing: building confidence, solving problems and gaining practical experience that can be taken into future Forest School sessions.

🌳 COME AND DISCOVER FOREST SCHOOL! 🌳

Would your child enjoy building dens, discovering wildlife, learning new skills and spending a whole day adventuring in the woods?

Come and see what Surrey Hills Forest School Holiday Club is all about at our Open Morning:

📅 Saturday 3 October
🕙 10am–12 noon
📍 Birtley Estate, Bramley, GU5 0LB

Bring your child along to explore our beautiful 48-acre woodland, meet the team and experience a taste of Forest School before booking an October Half-Term Holiday Club place.

It’s also a chance to ask questions and help your child become familiar with the setting - particularly if they haven’t attended Forest School before.

Places at the Open Morning are limited, so please register in advance:

🌿 WEEK TWO OF FOREST SCHOOL LEADER TRAINING 🌿

This week, our trainees discovered that Forest School learning sometimes means putting on a blindfold, trusting the people around you - and trying to balance a rather large stick!

Through practical activities and plenty of laughter, the group explored:

🌳 Using the senses to experience the woodland differently
🤝 Trust, communication and teamwork
🪵 Learning through play and shared problem-solving
🪢 Practical knot-tying skills, including the round turn and two half hitches

Every activity helps our trainees understand how thoughtfully planned outdoor experiences can build confidence, cooperation, resilience and a deeper connection with nature.
