One of the features of Kumon maths and English is that our students study every day of the year! Just 10 to 15 minutes study per day results in a huge amount of progress over the course of weeks and months, meaning that our Kumon students are always learning and do not suffer the “summer slide“ caused by the long summer school holidays.

There is so much more to Kumon study than just maths and English!

Did you know that the Kumon mission statement, which was formalised in the year 2000, dates back over 65 years to the objectives of its original founder, Toru Kumon. Initially developing the Kumon worksheets to help his son with maths at school, in 1962 Toru Kumon wrote a formal list of future objectives tying the Kumon method to the development of maximum individual ability and contributing to a peaceful world.

The USA is today celebrating 250 years of independence from England, which prompted me to look into how reading and writing were taught in America’s earliest days. It looks as if not much has changed! Here is an extract from the New England Primer of 1690, which was the most popular American textbook in the 18th century. Next to it is an extract from one of our Kumon worksheets. As the Americans say, “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it!”
