Have you heard about therapy dogs? Research has shown that building connections with our furry friends can increase the release of the happy hormone, oxytocin! This helps increase positive feelings, improving interactions and create a safe space for children, reducing stress, anxiety and even build self-esteem.

At Pond Meadow we are lucky to have 3 therapy dogs, Maddie, Jax and Pepper, all completing their training with PAWS Wellbeing. We have all loved getting to know the dogs and are committed to supporting their training.

Here is Maddie working with our students.

The new lunar year will bring in the year of the dragon, which will run until next January.
Yesterday we celebrated through a variety of activities; including preparing traditional foods from China.

This week is Children’s Mental Health Awareness week which was started by Place2Be in 2015. The aim for is to equip, empower and give a voice to every child in the UK – something we strive to do with our learners every day. ‘My Voice Matters’ is the 2024 theme.

We will be supporting our pupils this week
to communicate choices and express their opinions. Classes will be encouraging pupils to access different self-regulation activities, and vote for a fun activity on Friday!

With the help of Willow's Forest School, our reception and Key Stage 1 classes are able to experience the benefits of outdoor learning throughout the year. Research has shown that learning in the outdoor environment of a forest can help improve physical motor skills, increase motivation, concentration and self-confidence. We have also found it beneficial for self-regulation and language development in our pupils.

RSPB Big Schools Birdwatch
Nature is such an enriching environment for learning! The annual RSPB Birdwatch is the biggest wildlife survey for schools and a wonderful way to get students excited about our birdlife.
Last week, our learners took part in a bird hunt and made bird feeders to put in our meadow. They did some research about different birds and found out some interesting facts. There were bird-related craft activities and some of the students visited Bird World; where they enjoyed seeing a variety of birds.

Did you spot any birds over the weekend?

We love to hear why our learners enjoy coming to school at Pond Meadow.
Lewis from Year 3 says, ‘I like coming to school because I like being here to play with my friends inside and outside.’

Ensuring our learners are equipped for life is important to us. Our curriculum provides progressive opportunities for pupils to transfer and generalise their skills to a range of functional contexts. Like Willow class taking a trip to The Range, as part of the ‘DIY at Home’ topic or Lavender class learning to work with tools and change batteries.

Have you heard of Makaton sign language?
As a part of our total communication approach, we encourage pupils and staff to use Makaton sign language. This programme combines signs (gestures), symbols and speech. It isn’t intended to replace speech, but by using keywords and signs, it reinforces communication for our learners.

Here our learners are signing ‘computer’. Can you try it?

All aboard! Choooo choo!
We strongly believe in the power of play – and so does the All Aboard Club. We teamed up with them to provide a safe environment for learners to build with confidence, while immersing themselves in the world of trains. We love to see the focus, engagement and creativity that comes out of these sessions.

Exploring SCIENCE!
As a school we love to make learning fun!
When the Wizards visited us, they gave our learners a chance to experience science in action. Some learners even tried the experiments at home.
Did you try any of these?
Exploring balance with fizzy drink cans; Using hairdryers to hover balls in the air; Using suction to suspend water inside a cup; Exploring spinning origami helicopters and pupils experimented with friction and weight to remove a tablecloth without the pots falling!

What gets you into the festive mood? Is it the food… twinkle lights … or a cosy jumper?

Maddie’s Adventures: She has had a brilliant first week in school. She is getting used to her routine; needing lots of naps in between meeting all staff and children. The children have enjoyed taking her for walks in the meadow, giving her cuddles and stroking her. We are looking forward to starting PAWS training to learn more tricks and how to support the staff and pupils at Pond Meadow. The classes have voted for the design and colour of her PAWS in training jacket, and the majority have voted for a Green Jacket with the school logo on.
