Beautiful hoar frost today, when water vapour in the air undergoes deposition (or reverse sublimation) and turns straight into a solid forming these lovely crystals.

Had a fantastic day and learnt loads at the in Chesterfield today. Definately not just using this post to work out how hashtags and stuff work... (can't help noting the irony here - not sure it is digital skills that Chesterfield is famous for lacking..)

I was asked recently how I measured the progress of my students. The simple answer is, I can't, because I help a small number of students, all of whom have multiple variables which may be supporting their progress including my support, parental support, high levels of motivation, school support etc.

But that doesn't mean I don't help my students make progress, and the thing I love about my new role is that anecdotal evidence abounds in the form of messages from happy students :)

But research evidence is also available. The Educational Endowment Foundation (EEF) looked at 123 research studies on the effectiveness of private tuition and found that, on average, students made about 5 additional months progress with individual tuition than without, and that this progress was best when the tutor was a qualified teacher.

The research is summed up by this lovely quote:

"The approach allows the teacher or tutor to focus exclusively on the needs of the learner and provide teaching that is closely matched to each pupil’s understanding. One to one tuition offers greater levels of interaction and feedback compared to whole class teaching which can support pupils to spend more time on new or unfamiliar, overcome barriers to learning and increase their progress through the curriculum."

The report can be found here:

I look forward to continuing to help students make progress, with or without measuring it.
