I have a great love and interest for the Tengu, especially the Karasu Tengu.
This is why when I met Hatsumi Soke, I asked if he would please paint one for me, pictured here and still hangs in my Dojo.

Why did you start training? And do you still train now?
People come to martial arts for many reasons.
Self-defence. Confidence. Fitness. Discipline. Belonging. Challenge. Curiosity.
With Ninjutsu, there can be something else as well — mystery, history, stealth, strategy, weapons, Japanese culture, unconventional methods, and the attraction of learning something that feels different from the ordinary.
But sometimes the reason we give for starting is not the real reason.
And sometimes we do not fully understand that reason ourselves.
The more interesting question may be what happened afterwards.
Did training become part of who you are?
Did it grow from something you did into something you became?
There is a difference between saying:
“I do martial arts.”
and:
“I am a martial artist.”
One describes an activity.
The other describes identity.
And identity matters, because when training becomes part of who we are, we tend to find ways to continue despite work, injury, family commitments, age and setbacks.
But not everyone does continue.
Some drift away.
Some lose interest.
Some stop because what they originally came looking for was never found.
Others simply change, and martial arts no longer fits the person they have become.
So, some food for thought:
Why did you start training?
What did you hope to find?
Did you find it?
Do you still train now?
If you stopped, why did you stop?
And today, would you say “I do martial arts” — or “I am a martial artist”?

Here is Dr. Kacem Zoughari's most recent book and contents.
As seen in the contents page, the book discusses in depth the transmission of koryu martial arts.
This is an excellent addition to anyone's research collection who is serious about their understanding of traditional Japanese martial arts.
