Here is Bracken's approach to calculating the spring constant of the bananna leaf that Fred struck during his fall last week.
Bracken, my dog (pictured) is a close friend of Fred. She is very clever and was therefore asked to answer some questions:
Fred (mass of 2 Kg and with a kinetic energy of 100 joules) lands on a banana leaf and he oscillated up and down with an amplitude of 1 metre. What is the spring constant of the leaf? (GCSE level); clue - model the leaf as a spring.
What is the maximum velocity of the leaf as it oscillates? (A level).
What is the period and frequency of the oscillation? (A level).
Bracken will reveal her anwers and working on Sunday as usual.

Fred (my cat) says : "if my mass is 2Kg, the gravitational field strenght here in Grimsby is 10N/Kg, and I jump down 5 metres, I should be able to calculate my velocity just before I hit the ground". Freddy needs someone to check his calculations.
Assuming there is no air resistance, can you calculate his velocity and how did you do it?
I will post the answer on Sunday morning.
