Congratulations to our wonderful Mrs Law on an incredible milestone - 25 years of teaching, all of them at Green Hammerton CE Primary School!

Over the past 25 years, she has seen countless children (and staff!) come and go, and throughout it all she has made an extraordinary difference to so many young lives. Her kindness, compassion, professionalism and unwavering dedication have had a lasting impact on our school community.

Mrs Law may not always realise just how much she means to the children, families and colleagues she has supported over the years, but we are all immensely grateful for her commitment, hard work and care. She has helped shape generations of pupils, and Green Hammerton CE Primary School is a better place because of her.

Thank you, Mrs Law, for 25 years of inspiring, nurturing and making a difference. Here's to this remarkable achievement and everything you've contributed to our school community. Enjoy your well earned summer holiday!

Squirrel Class
We have had a fantastic time this week - we have had 5 days of fun!
On Monday we decorated biscuits ready for our picnic.
On Tuesday we brought in our teddies and had a teddy bear’s picnic in the wooded area.
On Wednesday we played parachute games on the field and then did a wonderful performance in the Church.
On Thursday we had a beach party - playing in the sand and paddling in the water.
On Friday we brought in our own toys from home.
Monday was also a special day for the Reception children. We had a graduation ceremony in front of our special adults and learned a poem about moving on - we are ready - yes we are!
We have had a lovely year in Squirrels with lots of fun and learning too. The children have grown in size and in confidence - which is great to see. We are proud of them all. Well done Squirrels! We wish you all a wonderful holiday and look forward to seeing you again in September.

Fox Class
What a fantastic final week we've had in Fox Class!
In Science, the children became marine biologists as they completed the final part of our topic. They enjoyed exploring the fascinating creatures that live beneath the waves and demonstrated some brilliant scientific thinking by asking questions, making observations and sharing what they had learned.
In Design and Technology, the children proudly completed their axles and wheels projects. They worked incredibly hard to design, build and test their own vehicles, using everything they have learned over the unit. We were so impressed with the creativity, resilience and problem-solving skills they showed, and the finished vehicles were absolutely amazing!
As we come to the end of the school year, we would like to say how proud we are of every child in Fox Class. They have worked incredibly hard, grown in confidence and made wonderful memories together. Thank you for all of your continued support throughout the year. We hope you all have a fantastic, well deserved summer holiday!

Hedgehog Class
We had a really exciting last week to finish the year as we started! Monday was Science Day, where we created moving water cycles, tested how water might evaporate at different rates in locations around the school, invented new vehicles for gritting roads in the winter and finished by creating Ooblek to discover materials that can act both as a liquid and a solid.
On Tuesday, we had a Maths Day learning about coordinates. We played battleships to practice reading and plotting coordinates before applying this to our learning. We then had DT Days on Thursday and Friday where we built and evaluated our pavilions! It has been a really fun final week of term and the children have continued putting in their best efforts right to the final lesson. This week was also our final swimming session of the year, which the swimming coaches made extremely fun for us all! Well done Hedgehogs class - a wonderful year with many fantastic experiences and memories made!

Owl Class
What a wonderful last week of the school year it has been. Owl Class have all enjoyed spending time together: learning, playing and having fun. Y6 pupils had their special ‘Leavers Tea Party’ with their families. The children shared information about themselves, their favourite memories of their time at our school and hopes and aspirations for the future. Mrs Law presented the children with some gifts and shared some photos, from present and past. We then enjoyed our last church service together to mark the end of the school year.

Wishing all of the Y6 pupils a very happy and successful future at their new schools. You have been an absolute pleasure to know and work alongside. I hope that you take with you lots of fond memories of Green Hammerton C of E Primary School. Be happy, keep smiling and stay safe. You will all be greatly missed.
Y5 pupils, I can’t wait to teach you again next year, as Y6s. I hope you are looking forward to a year of working hard and having fun! Stay safe over the summer holidays and I will see you in September.

Year 6 water Challenge!
The Year 6 children surprised the staff with a fun water fight, and the staff were soon able to get their own back! It was a fantastic way to celebrate together, and everyone had a wonderful time filled with laughter and smiles.

Intrasports - KS2 Golf Tournament
On Tuesday morning, Years 3 to 6 took part in a House golf tournament. This included a driving range challenge and a full game of mini-golf! The driving range was exceptionally close, with 1 point in it between first and second. Well done Ash for their driving range victory! With 380 strokes, the winning team for mini-golf was Willow! We combined the scores for each team to get a final winner for the overall tournament. Congratulations Ash for winning the House competition!

Hive
As we come to the end of another great year at Hive breakfast and afterschool club, we’d like to thank all of the children for making it great fun. The children have enjoyed a variety of activities and games including jigsaws, board games, crafts, den building and much more.
We hope everyone has a safe, happy and relaxing summer. We look forward to seeing you all in September.

A message from the Governors
Governance Matters.
As we reflect on our first year as a federation, the Village Schools Federation Governing Board is pleased to report that, while the year has brought both challenges and opportunities, it has been a positive and rewarding one overall.
We have seen many encouraging developments across our schools. Attendance remains strong, well above both the national and North Yorkshire averages, and our pupils continue to make good progress in their learning. We are also pleased that our financial position is significantly stronger than it was a year ago, providing a more secure foundation for the future.
While challenges remain, we are confident that, through the continued dedication and commitment of our staff and governors, we are well placed to address them and build on the progress we have made.
One of the greatest privileges of serving as governors has been spending time with our pupils. Whether visiting classrooms, attending sporting events, accompanying educational and residential trips, sports days, or school performances, we have seen first-hand the enthusiasm, resilience and achievements of our pupils. It has been a pleasure to share these experiences and celebrate their successes.
Thank you for your continued support and for the trust you place in us. We would also like to express our sincere thanks to the dedicated staff across both schools, whose hard work, professionalism, care and commitment enrich the lives of our children every day.

A bit later than usual as we have been so busy!

Squirrel class
We continue to improve our throwing and catching in our Friday P.E sessions and we have been practising these skills in partner activities and group games. In last week’s woodland session we learnt about protecting wildlife and went litter picking to help to keep the natural environment safe for our animals. Today’s session had a ‘Colour’ theme to link to our Colour Run and we went on a ‘Colour Hunt’ to search for different coloured natural materials. This week we were very fortunate to have a Forest School session led by Laura Harman, one of our parent Governors who has just completed her Forest School training. We did mud painting, leaf pressing and some nature games, including one with ‘rain’ from a water pistol, which was just what we needed to cool us down at the end of a very hot week!

Fox Class
This week in History, we have been busy completing our Punch and Judy puppets and putting them to good use! The children had lots of fun using their finished puppets to create and perform their own seaside inspired stories. They showed fantastic imagination and creativity, working together to develop characters, think of exciting adventures and bring their puppet shows to life. It has been wonderful to see the children's confidence grow as they performed for their friends, and they thoroughly enjoyed exploring this traditional form of seaside entertainment in such a hands on way.

In English, Fox Class also proudly performed their We're Going on a Bear Hunt inspired poems. Working in groups, the children created their own version, We're Going on a School Hunt, reflecting on the memories, experiences, and highlights they have enjoyed throughout the year. They then confidently performed them to the rest of the class. It was wonderful to see the children celebrating their year together and sharing their imaginative ideas with one another.

Hedgehog Class
Production practice kept us very busy this week, with an exceptional end result! We are very proud of the children for putting in so much effort to make Pirates of the Curry Bean as amazing as it was! We have been learning about 3D shapes in maths, using nets to build them from a flat 2D shape. In history, we have been exploring what life was like for everyday citizens in the ancient River Valley civilisations to help us understand where much of the early technology we take for granted today originated from. We have also been coding our own computer games on Scratch, applying the skills we had been taught throughout the year. In science, we learned how to defrost cars - definitely not needed this time of year but still an important life skill - using salt to change the melting point of water.

Owl Class
Another busy week in Owl Class. In history, we have continued our learning on crime and punishment across the ages. This week we studied the Anglo-Saxons. We found out how the legal system worked in Anglo-Saxon Britain and compared both the modern British and Roman justice system with that of the Anglo-Saxons. We looked at four case studies and took part in debates, giving the arguments from both the Anglo-Saxon and modern British viewpoint. A jury had to give their final decision.
In PSHE, we looked at the importance of personal hygiene during puberty. We identified body parts and areas to keep clean. We described ways to manage physical changes during puberty, including the use of specific products to keep us clean. The children have approached our RSE (relationships and s*x education) lessons in a sensible manner and with such maturity. Well done Y5/6!

KS2 Summer Production
A huge well done to all of the children involved in the KS2 production of, ‘Pirates of the Curry Bean’. What a fantastic show you all put on for our wonderful audiences - it was really enjoyable to watch and a pleasure to be part of. The children’s singing, dancing and acting skills were superb. A special mention to the lead roles, who had so many lines to learn; you were absolute superstars and made us all so proud!

Sports Day
A huge thank you to all of our spectators who joined us at Sports Day this week. We can confidently say that the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves competing in a range of races against their peers. It is one of our most enjoyable events on the school calendar and we look forward to it each year - it is always brilliant to see the children being active and having fun! Congratulations to Willow (red team) who were the winning house team for this competition.

A very hot 🥵 and busy week…

Squirrel Class
This week Squirrel Class has been learning about keeping safe in the sun. We learned a helpful rhyme and designed our own sun hats. All this knowledge came in useful when the heat arrived! We stayed in the shade, wore our hats, drank water, and had some water fun! We worked in teams to make shade shelters in our Outdoor Learning. We have also retold the Creation story through playdough models, talked about friendship when reading ‘Sharing a Shell’ and of course had a wonderful ‘elf rocket’ forest school session.

Fox Class
This week in Science, Fox Class continued their Ocean Protectors unit by learning about ocean litter and the impact it can have on marine life. We listened to the story Somebody Swallowed Stanley and discussed the harmful effects of littering in our oceans.
We then began an exciting science investigation focusing on observing changes over time. The children created five mini oceans using water bottles and placed a different piece of litter into each one from plastic, to baby wipes. They carefully observed what the litter looked like when it was first dropped into the water and recorded their observations. To represent the movement of the sea, we shook our bottles like a stormy ocean before leaving them for a week. As a class, we made predictions about what might happen to each piece of plastic over time. We are looking forward to revisiting our mini oceans next week to see whether our predictions were correct and to learn more about the long-lasting impact of plastic pollution on our oceans.

Hedgehog Class
We have braved the heat this week with lots of learning taking place outdoors. With canoeing pushed back due to the extreme weather, we took the opportunity to have an ‘outdoor day’ on Tuesday. Comfortably sitting under the gazebos, we summarised our Blue John story in writing by creating illustrations to capture each chapter of the story in a single snapshot. We dived into our maths angle lesson in the sunshine, and used the heat of the sun to help us when learning about some solids being able to melt. We were not surprised about the ice melting fast, however the butter lasted 2 hours without changing at all!
The beginning of the week may have been fun, but it was nothing compared to the residential trip on Thursday and Friday at Snowball Plantation. We braved the elements and had lots of fun doing all sorts of different activities across the two days.

Owl Class
In Religion & Worldviews, we are studying the unit, ‘What matters most to Christians and Humanists?’ This week we looked at what a humanist is and what codes for living do non-religious people use? These included the following: be honest, use your mind, tell the truth and do to other people what you would like them to do to you. We had to decide which were the most and least important and which would be hard and easy to keep. This proved to be a thought provoking exercise with lots of in depth discussions taking place.
On Thursday, our Year 6 pupils attended Crucial Crew. This event, run by North Yorkshire Police, is important in encouraging good citizenship to assist in reducing accidents, injuries, anti-social behaviour and crime, as well as protecting young people through education and awareness. Our pupils joined in a range of workshops including fire safety, water safety,online safety/s*xting, healthy living and the dangers of smoking/vaping. Our Year 6 pupils listened brilliantly, joined in enthusiastically and represented the school so well - we are proud of you Year 6!

Forest School Sessions
All four classes took part in Forest School sessions this week. Wow, they were brilliant! A HUGE thank you to FOGHS for funding these sessions. They were a huge success and we really appreciate being able to offer our pupils these amazing experiences.

Squirrels and Foxes started the sessions by whittling sticks and then adding a natural object and some gold to make a magic wand. Then we wanted to use the magic to make a potion that would launch an elf rocket. The children gathered the ingredients and made potions. The potion fueled the rockets and we watched as they were launched across the school field. The session finished with a cup of hot chocolate and the opportunity to toast marshmallows. Everyone had a fabulous time.

Hedgehogs and Owls had a lot of fun warming up with some senses games (including a water gun game - the children loved getting wet in the heat!) They then moved on to making their own bow and arrow from willow and used these to score points on targets. Next, they all enjoyed hot chocolate, toasted marshmallows and made popcorn on the fire. So much fun was had by all!

This week’s news….

Squirrel Class
This week Squirrels have been learning about planting and growing. We planted a bean as a gift to say thank you to any men who help us and look after us. We have also made a card for these men on Father’s Day - we enjoyed dressing up for the photo we put onto the plant on our card. In maths Reception have been using the Rekenrek to see 5, 10, 15 and 20. In maths Nursery went on a hunt looking for 0 in the classroom. As the weather has been better the children have also enjoyed exploring our outdoor classroom - and being very messy! We have been developing our throwing and catching skills and learning about resilience in our Friday ‘Multiskills’ P.E sessions. These really helped the Reception children at the multi-skills event on Wednesday.

Fox Class
Fox Class have been thoroughly enjoying their new music topic, Tanczymy Labada. As part of their learning, the children have been exploring traditional Polish music and culture.
This week, the children learned a traditional Polish dance, listening carefully to the rhythm and beat of the music as they practised the different steps and movements. They showed great enthusiasm and confidence as they danced together, developing their coordination and musical understanding along the way.

Hedgehog Class
A very busy week in Hedgehogs class! Along with an exciting intra-school rounders competition, we have gotten stuck in with our Ancient Civilisations topic, exploring the fascinating Indus Valley civilisation. We became true historians, exploring primary sources to discover just how advanced people were who lived more than 5,000 years ago! We have loved starting work on the KS2 production, with some of us taking on roles as we develop our performance skills. Another highlight of the week has been our coding in computing, where we have been developing our skills in programming while learning to debug when something goes wrong. It has taken a lot of patience and determination, but led to some incredible results. A few of the children recently moved up in their swimming groups - well done on some amazing technique being used in the pool!
We have also begun to develop our technical engineering skills through our DT pavilions topic. We have been exploring methods to add structural stability, including cross-braces, wide bases and reinforcing materials. We attempted to build towers 25cm tall using only PVA glue and lolly sticks, and rose to the challenge!

Owl Class
This week, Owls have enjoyed starting on the KS2 summer production. Auditions have been held and roles have been assigned. Now the hard work begins: children have to get into character, learn their lines and start choreographing some dance moves. Exciting times to come - we can’t wait to perform for you in a few weeks!
With it being ‘Arts Week’ this week, we carried out some art and poetry linked to our entries to the Tockwith Show. This year the theme is goats. Children were able to be creative and choose the style of poem they wanted to write: acrostic, free verse, haiku, cinquain or strict verse. We had a real range and the finished products were excellent. These will be on display at Tockwith Show on Sunday 2nd August 2026 for all to see.

This week is national ‘drowning prevention week’. On Wednesday, Y5/6 took part in an online virtual session aimed at educating students on the dangers open water poses, such as cold water shock, hidden undercurrents and unseen operational machinery, as well as how to keep themselves and their friends safe and what to do in an emergency situation. This proved to be very informative and enjoyable.
In DT, we worked on experimenting with joining techniques. This stage was necessary before we set about designing and making our bridges. We looked at a straight joint, an angled joint, a truss and a more advanced technique.

All the news from our first week back after the half term break…

Squirrel Class
This half term our theme is ‘Fun in the Sun.’ We started the topic by reading together ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’ by Ronda and David Armitage. This led to us learning about lighthouses, healthy lunches and singing sea shanties! In Drawing Club the Reception children invented ways for the lunch to be delivered to the lighthouse, these included bumble bees, butterflies and robots.
Our new question in Religions and Worldviews is ‘What is special about our world?’ and we began by looking at and describing the things in the world around us such as leaves, sticks, pine cones and shells. In PE we are playing games and learning how to take turns, follow instructions to understand the rules, and dealing with the outcome not always going our way. A busy start to the new half term!

Fox Class
Fox Class have started their new DT topic, Mechanisms, with a focus on wheels and axles. This week, we explored different types of wheels and axles and drew and labelled diagrams to help us understand how they work. Over the coming weeks, we will build on this learning and use our knowledge to design and make our own vehicle by the end of the half-term.

Hedgehog Class
We have begun this term by exploring two books: Blue John and Varjak Paw. We have explored the link between famous classical music and the Blue John folk tale, which has inspired some descriptive writing, while our guided reading has looked at a cat that will learn martial arts! In our history lesson, we have looked at the seven ancient wonders and their importance in the ancient world.
Our coding lessons involved discovering infinite and time-controlled loops which resulted in us making some very entertaining dancing dinosaurs! We were given time to independently explore and discover different codes and how they work, allowing us to push our creativity further and learn to debug problems at the same time!

Owl Class
In history, we started our new unit on ‘Crime and Punishment’ through the ages. This week's focus was on the Romans and how they dealt with criminals and in particular slaves. The children were fascinated by the fact that these people had to fight other gladiators, wild animals or condemned criminals. Next session, we are looking forward to learning about the Anglo-Saxon laws and justice. This is going to prove to be a very interesting (and rather gruesome) topic!
As part of our STEM project ‘Road to Riat’, that we took part in during the autumn term, we had an online ‘Meet the STEM Superstars’ session. We heard from different people in a range of STEM jobs: Heather Bates (a software engineer), Mike Glenn (an aviation expert), Sian Burrows (an aircraft design and development engineer) and others. They all inspired and motivated us for possible future jobs and careers.

School Games Award
We are delighted to announce that we have achieved the School Games GOLD Mark Award for the 2025-2026 academic year. The school games mark is a Government-led award scheme facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their development in PE. competitions and sporting achievements.

Final news roundup of this half term…

Squirrel Class
This week Squirrel Class has been on a Dinosaur Discovery! We started by reading ‘Tyrannosaurus Drip’ by Julia Donaldson. Then we explored fossils and made our own using clay and dinosaur footprints. This week we still have chrysalis in the classroom - we are hopeful they will become butterflies very soon - but no sign yet! A very busy last week of half term - Squirrels are ready for the holiday!

Fox Class
This week, Fox Class proudly completed their Art project by creating traditional Guatemalan worry dolls. The children showed fantastic creativity and concentration throughout the process, with a particular focus on carefully winding wool around the wooden sticks to form the dolls’ bodies and clothing. They worked patiently and thoughtfully, developing their fine motor skills while bringing their colourful creations to life. We were incredibly impressed with their perseverance, attention to detail and the pride they took in their finished worry dolls.

Hedgehog Class
What a fun last week of term! We began the week learning about earthquakes and volcanoes, culminating in an experiment to make eruptions happen (a couple of us - Mr Mason included - went home smelling of fish and chips). We completed our art projects and evaluated our nests, which we were really proud of. We had our last cricket session with York City FC and have thoroughly enjoyed learning to play the sport. One of the biggest highlights this week was our information texts all about Rainforests. We were applying our grammar skills to create an information board to share lots of interesting information we have learned!

Owl Class
In art, with Mrs McLelland, the children have been working on ‘shadow puppets.’ They have been looking at the tradition of using intricate cutouts to narrate a story. Each pupil created a character from our English text (The Arrival) and had to carefully think about its features and characteristics to be able to turn it into a puppet. Sky scrapers were designed and narration added to add interest to the final pieces. The children have had great fun carrying out their plays for each other!
In music we have been using tuned instruments (glockenspiels) to play along to the tune ‘chariots of fire’. The children were amazing at this and picked it up very quickly. We then explored harmony to create a new soundtrack for the moving images.

This week’s learning…

Squirrel Class
This week in Squirrels our story has been ‘Commotion in the Ocean’ and on Monday Nursery enjoyed making under the sea pictures, both sticking and painting. Reception have been retelling the story in Drawing Club - drawing characters (sea creatures) and the setting (beach and sea) and then inventing their own sea creatures on adventure day. In maths Reception children have been using sentences to describe and compare the length and height of objects. In our classroom worship this week we looked at our Christian value of Service and talked about ‘living for others’ by being kind, sharing, showing respect and gratitude. The children drew pictures of themselves helping at home by tidying up and playing with younger siblings. Our caterpillars have grown and have moved up to the top of the jar and started to change into a chrysalis. The children know that this is a very delicate stage of the Butterfly Life Cycle.

Fox Class
Fox Class have been enjoying their English topic based on the book Speak Up! and have been learning about how children can use their voices to make positive changes in their community.
As part of their learning, this week we have been exploring how questionnaires can help gather people’s opinions. Together, we discussed the different types of questions we could ask, including open questions and closed questions and which would be best to gather thoughts and ideas. The children then wrote some questions they felt would help them learn what people would like to improve in our local area.

Hedgehog Class
Our geography skills were put to the test this week when we were learning about the use of land in Europe, which involved us creating trade route maps for different countries and goods to help us understand imports and exports. We have also been enjoying testing out magnetic fields by putting magnets under paper and sprinkling iron filings on top. We could visually see the magnetic fields and compared how they looked when more magnets were introduced!
In our Art lessons, we have been constructing nests out of wire and different materials to create our own vision of what a nest could look like. We have been really enjoying this creative project over the past two weeks!

Owl Class
This week, Owl Class began their exciting new science topic on evolution and inheritance. We started by exploring adaptation and learning how animals and plants have changed over time to suit their environments. The children were particularly interested in Charles Darwin’s research on the finches of the Galápagos Islands. To help us understand this, we carried out a fun experiment using different tools to represent finch beaks and a variety of objects to represent food sources. The children had just thirty seconds to collect as much “food” as possible and then looked for patterns in their results. We discovered that larger “beaks” struggled to pick up smaller items such as beads and pom poms, which represented seeds and berries, while smaller, thinner “beaks” were much better suited to collecting “invertebrates.” From our investigation, we were able to conclude that finches are best adapted to live on islands where the available food matches the shape of their beaks.

KS2 SATS
This week, it has been KS2 SATs. This has involved our Y6 pupils sitting tests: EGPS (English, grammar, punctuation and spelling), reading and three maths papers (one arithmetic and two reasoning papers). We could not be prouder of how the Y6s have conducted themselves. The children tackled the tests calmly and with enthusiasm, maturity and resilience. What a fantastic group of pupils, who we have had the pleasure of teaching and guiding through their KS2 journey. To celebrate the end of SATs, we took the children for a ‘party in the park’ where lots of delicious food and drink was enjoyed. The children had a lot of fun playing with their friends, knowing they had all tried their very best in their tests. Thank you so much to these amazing children and to their parents who have shown such fantastic support throughout the year.

Science in Hive
This Monday, we learned about how convex lenses work. We began by dripping water onto coins to see how the convex water shape magnified the coins. We then compared the shape to lenses, and began to assemble our own telescopes using cardboard tubes and plastic convex lenses. We then went outside to test them out!
