WALK 119: How Hill Nature Reserve 🌿

How Hill may ring a bell in some people’s minds, it’s a common Norfolk school trip location. With plenty to do and see, easily a day of discoveries at your fingertips.

How Hill was designed by Thomas Boardman in 1904, and is now run by the Broads Authority and The How Hill Trust - established in 1984.

The secret gardens and The house gardens are absolutely beautiful, they are the perfect place for a sit down, or a game of hide and seek. Toad Hall Cottage is open from April to October offering a small museum and ice creams.

We made our way to Ludham , along the broads, and stopped off for a takeaway tea and cake from The Wayfarers Cafe.

There is a public car park, toilets and it is a dog friendly location (on leads).

Very rarely do people feature in my landscape paintings of the Broads. In 1999 I painted this scene titled “Eric Edwards at How Hill”. Reed cutter and legendary marshman Eric Edwards was made an MBE in 2004 for services to the Broads. Eric cut reed and sedge at How Hill National Nature Reserve for 40 years. He was one of only two reed-cutters in the Broads to still use a scythe. He gave thousands of talks and demonstrations to schoolchildren at the How Hill Environmental Study Centre. Eric passed away on 24th May 2012 aged 71. If you’d like to find out more and listen to an interview with him, search YouTube using the words “Eric Edwards Broads”, and you will find photos and audio uploaded by Museum Broads How Hill Trust
Thank you to How Hill Trust for our educational visits where our young people learnt all about local nature, wildlife preservation and The Broads! It was fascinating to learn about the Yarmouth eco-system, and the adventure on the boat was thoroughly enjoyed! 🌳

Residential environmental study centre. Also a unique setting for business or private functions

How Hill House, situated in the heart of the Norfolk Broads, was built in 1904 by the architect Edward Thomas Boardman as his family's holiday home. The house became a study centre in 1967, but ever since 1984 it has been managed by an independent charitable trust which ensures that the property is cherished. The house is surrounded by delightful Edwardian gardens, but there is also a quite separa
