BACK TO SCHOOL FOR THE NEURODIVERGENT CHILD
Returning to school can ask far more of a neurodivergent child than simply putting the uniform back on and walking through the gates.
There may be changes in routine, sensory load, social expectations, executive-function demands, uncertainty, transitions and the effort of holding everything together across the school day.
That is why I created this 3-page BiteSize Guide to Back to School for the Neurodivergent Child — for parents, carers and schools.
Inside, I look at:
• why the return to school can feel bigger than it looks
• the sensory, executive-function, social, emotional and transition load
• why capacity can change from one day to the next
• making the first part of the day easier
• building predictability without creating more pressure
• supporting the school day when mental energy is already being used up
• why some children appear to cope at school and struggle afterwards
• starting with the individual child rather than the diagnosis
• recognising when preparation is helpful — and when too much preparation can increase anxiety
The aim is not to remove every challenge.
It is to understand what returning to school requires from this particular child — and reduce unnecessary load where we can.
