We have had a great time with some of my new Literacy Avenue sentence builder resources this week. They have captured our imagination so much so that a quick warm up task took over our session and the floor!

We have used them to warm up our writing brains, practise sentence structure and composition, for word class spotting, reading comprehension and description.

I have to say I am a fan and so are the children. 😎

We know that learning to build an accurate and interesting sentence doesn't mean you have to be sat still with a pen in your hand and a book in front of you!

As luck would have it, there are no sessions on a Friday here, which came in handy this week. Ceri Banfield | Virtual Assistant Agency decided not to let the cancellation of the Barcelona Ironman stop her from doing an Ironman in its entirety, right here. So, my admin was left undone and off around Devon we went enthusiastically in support of this incredible human, doing an incredible thing.

Ceri barrelled into my life 23 whole years ago. In that time, she has shown me repeatedly that amazing things can be achieved if you have enough grit, enough determination and enough imagination. That all of that can be done whilst being wholeheartedly yourself.

The world can feel a bit scary at times, but you do not have to look very far for the good. For inspiration, for support, for community. If you are in Great Torrington, Function Fitness | Coaching & Nutrition Torrington is right there with all of that. With a team that will cheer for you in the rain, run with you in the night, wait for you in the darkest of dark.

I am so lucky to be a part of that community, to have had Ceri in my life for more than half of it and to live here, in this special town.

'My child had been traumatised by adults at school and didn't trust any adult, unless there was a parent there. For him to be able to stay with you for half an hour, on only the second session, regardless of the learning that occurred, is absolutely amazing.

The space you have created is so warm and inviting, which is such a big aspect of a classroom or learning space where people need to trust you.

You are so excited to learn and that is felt by the child. I know they feel safe and they feel excited to learn and to play and to explore. It has just been wonderful that he can come for half an hour on his own without me and he doesn't need that safety net.

This is a really wonderful step for him, so thank you.'

Now, professor of reading I am not.

But I am, a reading enthusiast, a reading champion AND a teacher with 8 years experience.

The Discovery Den, Devon is nearly finished and has been in use for the last month (where did that go!). In that time, I have unpacked bits and bobs at random.

I popped some of my favourite books on a (very high) shelf, just to display them ... the next day multiple seperate children asked to have a look and all of a sudden, we were making time in our session to read the books that had caught their eye. Not because they walked in desperate to read (we had other super plans), but because they saw them and they were interested.

And guess what, the same books have been there a couple of weeks and the asking has stopped. Time to rotate! Luckily, there are more books in this house than anything else!

Well hello there!

If you are new here (and lots of you are!), my name is Jade - teacher, tutor, artist, reading enthusiast and lover of fresh air and creativity.

You might well be thinking, what a fancy photo! And you would be right. This was not take on ye olde Samsung.

I had a very exciting visit from Kayleigh Lee || Devon Photographer , and some very special magic sprinkled here in our den. I am delighted to share the first of a wonderful bunch of photos with you, with many of the rest destined for my (incoming soon) very own website.

Stay tuned for more photographic wizardry from the super talented Kayleigh, a brilliant human whom I met at The Femme Collective (where many super talented humans gather!).

Another handful of snapshots from the past two weeks. ☀️

We have here just some of the tasks our learners have tackled including:

Explorations into place value with dice games, reasoning tasks, number composition and greater or less than comparisons.

Word class sorting (after word class hunting, of course).

Sentence structure work, inspired by the colourful semantics speech and language development approach and based on subjects the learners love (featured here, spitfires and pokemon).

Character design and comic strip story planning.

Spelling rule pattern spotting in one our favourite stories.
