A different Monday Nordic Walk in Malmesbury tonight! We were on a Scarecrow Trail and the theme was sports! We managed to spot 23 out of 41 on our 3.5 mile route around the town! We celebrated with a chippy tea afterwards! Thanks to all those creative folk for making great scarecrows!

What does your Nordic walking Instructor do when faced with a free day?? She takes a good friend on an adventure! On Friday Gemma and I set off to complete the Malvern Hills End to End challenge! Walking from Chase End in the South to North Quarry in the North, billed as a strenuous 9-10 mile walk taking in the major summits. I think we both underestimated those summits and the heat of the day, but together we are both determined and resilient! Shout out to the fab staff at Sally's Place (near the British Camp car park) who kindly refilled our water bladders! We had a restorative lunch and stop there. We walked 10.88 miles with 2958 ft of elevation gain in just over 6 hours and both quietly doubted we would finish it at one point! The views were definitely worth the climbs, absolutely stunning and far (could see the Brecon Beacons) We were not so keen on some of the steep descents! Great day out!

Here at Nordic Nomads before every Nordic walking session we spend a few minutes waking up and warming up our bodies!
Warming up before Nordic walking is crucial because we are about to engage up to 90% of our body's muscles, activating both the upper and lower body. A dynamic warm-up gradually increases your heart rate, lubricates your joints, and prepares your tendons, ligaments, and muscles for an active arm swing and pole propulsion.
Our warm-up mobilizes stiffness in your joints so your body handles the repetitive motion smoothly, it wakes up your core, back, and upper body ensuring you use correct posture rather than tensing up, it reduces the risk of muscle strains or calf cramps by increasing blood flow and tissue elasticity before you reach your normal walking speed and safely raises your heart rate rather than shocking your system with a sudden leap in exertion. Plus it gives me as an Instructor a chance to have a quick look around at how my walkers are moving and check in with them!

Our Explorer Nordic Walk in July took us from Ashton Keynes to Cricklade via the Leigh and we visited 4 churches on the Athelstan Pilgrim Way. Amazing history, architecture, painted ceilings, a moved church and some beautiful countryside along the way, including stretches of the Thames Path. Our mascot Norbert remembered to get his picture taken with all the dogs in the churches this time! It was a hot day and the churches provided welcome relief from the sun as well as an opportunity to rest!

Following on from looking at our arm swing last week, this week we are looking at making our Nordic walking as efficient as possible. Building on a great arm swing by planting the pole in the ground as your hand swings forward to a low handshake height, pushing down and back through the strap, releasing your hand from the pole as it passes your hip and extending your arm back to increase the forward propulsion. This is the most technical part of our technique and requires practice! You should feel it in your triceps (back of the arm) when you get it right. You need to plant those poles with purpose!
Combine this with squashing those lemons, rolling the earth away under your feet driving the body forward with less perceived effort! Rotation of the upper body will happen naturally at this point! Nordic walking for the win!!
