🇪🇸 Spanish September — Day 1 🇪🇸

We’re kicking off Spanish September with one of the most important verbs in the Spanish language: ser = to be!

If you’re learning Spanish, knowing how to conjugate ser in the present tense is essential.

Yo soy = I am

Tú eres = you are

Él / Ella es = he / she is

Nosotros / Nosotras somos = we are

Vosotros / Vosotras sois = you are (informal, plural- mainly Spain)

Ellos / Ellas son = they are

Ustedes son = you are (plural - used throughout Latin America and formally in Spain)

Throughout September, we’ll be sharing a Spanish tip every day, covering grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, culture and more.

📍 Wondering where to find us?

We know our little Language School can be a bit tricky to spot the first time you visit, so here’s exactly where we are! 👋

You’ll find The Language School inside Great Eccleston Village Centre. Head through the entrance on the left-hand side of the building and you’ll find us on the first floor for all lessons except for the Conversation Café which is held on the ground floor ☕️

🇺🇾 Happy Independence Day, Uruguay!

Today (25 August) marks Uruguay’s Independence Day, celebrating the country’s declaration of independence in 1825. It’s a day of national pride, with celebrations taking place across the country.

In June 2025, one of tutors, Tom, had the opportunity to visit Montevideo, Uruguay’s capital, and experience some of its culture first-hand. Swipe through to discover a few highlights from his trip!

📸 Image 1 – The Flag
The blue and white stripes represent the original departments of Uruguay, while the Sun of May symbolises freedom and independence across much of South America.

🎥 Image 2 – La Rambla
Stretching over 20 km along the Río de la Plata, La Rambla is Montevideo’s iconic waterfront promenade. It’s a favourite spot for walking, cycling, relaxing and watching the sunset.

📸 Images 3 & 4 – Plaza Independencia
The city’s most famous square links Montevideo’s Old Town with the modern city. It is home to the monument and mausoleum of José Gervasio Artigas, Uruguay’s national hero, and is surrounded by historic buildings.

🍽️ Image 5 – Chivito
Uruguay’s national sandwich is filled with steak, ham, cheese, egg, lettuce and tomato. Despite its name (“little goat”), it traditionally contains beef and is a must-try for visitors.

🧉 Image 6 – Mate
More than just a drink, mate is a way of life in Uruguay. It’s common to see people carrying a thermos and mate cup wherever they go, sharing it with friends and family as a symbol of community and hospitality.

At The Language School, we love celebrating not only the languages we teach, but also the cultures, traditions and history behind them.

What is a Conversation Café?🗣️
It’s a 90 minute session we hold once a month on a Saturday morning where the main focus is practising speaking the language you are learning in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. There is a tutor who oversees each group to help you split into pairs, gives you topics to talk about and answers any language questions which might crop up.

Last weekend, our French & German tutor James took a trip back to Oxford and visited his old college, Brasenose College. 🏛️

It was a lovely opportunity to revisit some familiar places, reflect on old memories and see how things have changed since his time there! 📚✨

We’re lucky to have tutors like James bringing their own experiences, knowledge and passion for languages into the classroom. 🇫🇷🇩🇪

🕡 6:45pm – Upper Beginners

This class is ideal if you've already covered some of the basics and want to keep progressing. You'll typically already know:

Tired of overthinking which pronoun to use every time you order a coffee or talk to a group? ☕

Here’s the quick rule of thumb for **all** your options:

👉 **Tú:** Friends, family, and peers/strangers around your age.

👉 **Usted:** Teachers, bosses, elders, and strictly formal situations.

👉 **Vosotros:** Talking to a *group* of friends/peers (used mostly in Spain 🇪🇸).

👉 **Ustedes:** Talking to *any* group in Latin America 🌎, OR a formal group in Spain.

Drop a 🙋‍♂️ in the comments if you’ve ever accidentally used *usted* with someone your own age!
