Dummies can be great for young babies, helping them to settle and calm.

Are you having to get up several times a night because your little one’s dummy has fallen out?

When to “ditch the dummy” is very much a personal choice.

There are several ways to achieve this:

Going Cold turkey can work really well for some babies; they may just need a little extra help to settle by shushing, patting, rocking or a technique that works for your little one.

If your little one has a dummy during the day, remove it during their wakeful times. Toddlers can respond well to the dummy being replaced by a comfort object such as a small teddy, doll or blanket.

It's often easier to remove the dummy from daytime naps first. Try removing the dummy just after they have fallen asleep; if they start to wake, try reassuring them with a comforting pat or verbally shushing them. Should they get really upset, pop the dummy back in and then try again either in the same nap or the next day.

Next, try working on the night-time sleep using the same method as above. You may find that you have a few rubbish nights initially, but hopefully, the transition doesn’t last long.

Cold turkey or a gradual approach? It’s up to you. You know your little ones best, how sensitive they are and how much support they are likely to need.

Dropping from 2 to 1 nap 😴

This can be tricky, but hopefully, this post will give you a few tips to help you negotiate this transition. It can take time, patience, and a little bit of tweaking to establish this new routine. 🤣

Start by reducing the morning nap down gradually to 30 minutes.⏰

Gradually push the nap back later in the morning, moving towards midday.⏰

This may result in your little one needing an earlier bedtime initially, roughly 5-6 hours after the nap. This, however, can result in early morning wake-up times. Don’t worry; this can be adjusted once your little one is established in their new routine.

So, your new routine may look like this at the beginning, as your little one will probably struggle to get to midday😴

Nap 11-1 pm

Early Bed 6-6.30 pm

Moving towards

Nap 12-2 pm

Bedtime 7-7.30 pm

If that’s what works for you.

Don’t forget there are likely to be days when your little one may still need two naps which is totally normal. Don’t worry! You haven’t failed or done anything wrong – tomorrow is another day.🙂

Save this post or tag a mum who may find this useful. 😊

There are three things I highly recommend to help optimise your little ones' sleep environment. Creating a calm, relaxed bedtime can help your little one settle and drift off to sleep more easily.

Use black-out blinds to make your little one’s sleep environment super dark and calm. Melatonin levels begin to rise when it starts to get dark, helping to promote the feeling of sleepiness. Babies start to produce their own Melatonin from around 12 weeks. Daylight inhibits the production of melatonin.

Use white or pink noise and keep it on for the whole duration of the nap or sleep. This can help to block out background noise, which can disturb the quality of your little ones' sleep.

Keep your little one’s room cool; between 16 – 20 degrees is an ideal safe temperature. Make sure your little one is wearing suitable clothing for the time of year. Many children wake early in the morning, especially in the cooler months. Popping a pair of socks on can help.

How long is your little one awake between naps?

I am sure you have all read many charts showing average awake times for various ages.

These do vary and can be very different in what they recommend.

Whilst they can be useful, individual babies, toddlers and school-age children have different sleep needs and different amounts of time they can stay awake for.

Many parents get stressed trying to stick to wake windows that are just not right for their little ones.

They do work beautifully for some – but definitely not for all.

Keep an eye out for your little ones' sleepy cues to help you judge when they need a nap or bedtime.

Sleep can vary from day to day and you may find your little one is more sleepy for their first morning nap than one later in the day.

How do you judge when your little one needs a nap? Comment below💜💜
