Before I was born, my grandparents moved to Spain (at a time when not many people were!) and so as I grew up, my parents took advantage of this fact and we went to stay for Easter, Christmas and summer holidays. This started my interest in learning Spanish and I was alw
ays brought up to believe that if you wanted something, you should try to learn to ask for it in that country's language. I went on to study Spanish at degree level, particularly Latin American Spanish, which has a different accent to European (or Castellano) Spanish. I lived in Mexico, where I really got to grips with the language and amongst other things, taught English. I have extensively travelled throughout Latin America, having worked for a Latin American travel company in the U.K, which gave me the chance to use my Spanish. When I had children I decided that one of the greatest gifts I could give, would be the gift of another language and set out on the journey to raise them bilingually. It started with nerves, grammatical errors and a steep learning curve for vocabulary in Spanish, surrounding the needs of both a baby (e.g. ¡cambiemos tu pañal!) and a toddler (e.g. necesito una trona) which you don't need much in pre-child Spanish! Almost 7 years later I'm delighted that both children have an excellent comprehension of Spanish. I've also worked as a Spanish tutor which I really enjoyed but my passionate belief that children should be exposed to language as young as possible, has led me to start running groups for preschoolers and their parents to come together and support each other to learn.
