Language matters in safeguarding.

Even well-intended questions can introduce doubt, guilt, or fear. This can stop a child from continuing a disclosure.

Keep communication neutral and supportive.
Avoid leading questions or anything that suggests blame.

The goal is not to analyse immediately.

It is to create a safe space for communication.

Develop safe communication skills for Child Protection and Safeguarding.

Safeguarding records must be clear, factual, and accurate.

Write what you saw.
Write what was said.
Write what you did.

Avoid interpretation, assumptions, or emotional language.

Using the child’s exact words, where possible, preserves meaning and supports safeguarding processes later.

Poor recording creates risk.

Good recording builds a clear, defensible timeline.
This is one of the most important practical safeguarding skills.

Most safeguarding concerns do not begin with a disclosure.

They begin with small, observable changes in behaviour, mood, or engagement.

Recording appropriately means focusing on clear, factual information:

What you observed

What the young person said (use their exact words where possible):

· The time, date, and context

· Any immediate action taken

· Who the information was shared with

Records should be accurate, timely, and free from opinion. This ensures they are safe, defensible, and useful for decision-making.
