If you’re currently looking at primary schools for your child to apply for a place in September 2027 and you’re not sure where to start, don’t worry! Here are our thoughts on some of the things you might want to consider before making a decision.

How will you travel there?
Can you walk to the school from your house? If not, what is the journey like during busy hours, and is there adequate parking?

What extra-curricular activities do they offer?
Ask what clubs the school offers, how regular they are, and what trips, sports and arts opportunities are available.

What are their policies on behaviour and learning?
Make sure you’re comfortable with how the school approaches behaviour and learning, as managing behaviour works best when you can support it at home. You can find most policies online on the school’s website.

Do they offer wraparound care?
If you need a breakfast or after-school club, find out whether the schools you are looking at provide this. Times and prices often vary from school to school, so it’s worth checking out.

What was their last Ofsted report like?
While the school’s most recent Ofsted report shouldn’t be the only thing you consider, it will highlight some of the school’s key strengths and weaknesses. You can find the latest report on the school’s website.

How does it compare to other local schools?
Even if you know where you would like to apply for your child, it is still worth looking at other schools to compare and get a feel for what you or your child may like.

Struggling to get your child back into a homework routine? Here are five tips to get you started.

Agree on times and stick to them
Start making homework a habit. Whether it’s straight after school, after clubs or on set days, pick a time that works for your family and stick to it. That way, it will become an expected part of the week instead of a battle.

Provide a snack first
An empty stomach can be distracting and make it much harder to focus and feel productive. If the best time for homework is before dinner, a light snack such as a banana could help.

Set some time aside each week to plan priorities
Keep a list of what homework is due when and start with the most urgent or important work first. Encourage your child to tick it off as they go to avoid missing anything.

Find a quiet spot
Find a quiet, comfortable space for homework. If it’s hard to avoid noise, earphones can help to block it out.

Practise learning techniques
Many of the skills needed for homework take time to learn. Studying passages, retrieving information, or memorising equations all get easier once they’ve found techniques that suit them. If they’re struggling with specific skills, practise those as much as possible.

As secondary school open days take place over the next few weeks, we've put together a list of things you might want to think about when choosing a secondary school for your child.

Find out about school life
Look carefully at their website to get a feel for their values, what they prioritise, and practical information such as school start and end times, uniform requirements (which will give you an idea of the costs), and admissions policy.

Gather a list of questions before you go
It can be easy to forget things in the hustle and bustle of an open day, so jot down anything important. Take your child with you so they can get a feel for the school, too. Check facilities such as sports areas, IT resources and creative spaces.

Talk to staff and pupils
Try to get a sense of the atmosphere and chat with school staff as much as possible. Chatting with families and students already at the school can also give you a realistic view of both the positives and the challenges.

Take your time
You don't have to rush into a decision straight away. The deadline for secondary school applications in Kent is 31 October this year, so you can take your time to compare once you’ve completed all your visits and research.

Our 11 plus mock tests give children the unique opportunity to sit an 11 plus-style test under exam conditions. They will sit a paper we have developed to be similar to the real thing and receive detailed feedback to help them improve before the big day. We have dates available in Gravesend, Bexley, and Maidstone. You can choose from specific assessments developed for the Kent (GL), Medway or Bexley (Quest) test. Visit our website for full details.

Our summer holiday 11 plus intensive courses are perfect for last-minute prep for this year’s 11 plus. Whether your child needs to focus on a few areas that still require a little practice, or just needs a confidence boost ahead of the real thing, our 11 plus intensive courses are the perfect option. The courses are 12 hours long, spread over three days in one week. You can choose either Quest or a combination of GL & Quest, depending on which test your child is taking.

If your child is working toward the 11 plus in September 2027, we offer pre-11 plus courses this summer and weekly tuition starting in September.
