Grasmere School & Nursery

Grasmere School & Nursery We aim:
To support each other’s growth. To ask wonderful questions and discover our own potential. Confident, aspirational children are what we nurture.

To have strategies for responding positively, honourably, courageously and creatively to all the challenges we will face in life. Grasmere School and Nursery - a small school with big ambitions, in the heart of the Lake District. As we are small, every child is very important to the life of our community. Learning how to live life to the full is what we're about:

"Bliss was it in

that dawn to be alive, but to be young was very heaven," as William Wordsworth put it. We love to be out and about in our locality, learning in the outdoors, and engaging in worlds outside the classroom. We aim:

To support each other’s growth in a spirit of loving responsibility

To ask wonderful questions and discover our own interests and potential

To have strategies for responding positively, honourably, courageously and creatively to all the challenges we will face in life.

🎼🎺🎺🎺 July is a wonderful, complicated, fast-paced part of the school year. Lots of projects are coming to fruition, and I keep coming across engrossed groups busy perfecting something... Here are our Year 6 brass players, under a tree, practising for the Leavers Service. Aren't they wonderful! Several of them have just passed their grade 5 ABRSM exams. We're so proud of them. Many thanks to Dave Higson for great teaching, and for being flexible with timings so that they could have a refreshing swim in the beck before this session!

One of these children has only been playing for a year, having taken up our 'brass bursary'. His progress has been astonishing. Brass bursaries will be available again in September, for all those interested in playing.

When you're only 6 years old, and you've been on a lovely overnight residential, and you're going to walk back to school... it's so good to see a minibus turning up to collect the bags! The minibus enjoyed the outing too... Our buses get to some wonderful places.

It was the first residential for a lot of these children, and the first night away from home for some of them. It's a privilege to be able to share these experiences with some very brave, positive and excited children.

⚽️⚽️⚽️ Well that was exciting! Lots of children showed up for the (very) early breakfast showing of England v Mexico at 7am this morning. None of them knew the final scoreline, and the adrenaline in the room was tangible. Thank you so much, parents, for all the croissants, and the lovely fruit platters. We had a great time. 🦁🦁🦁

πŸš΄β€β™€οΈ 🚴 πŸš΄β€β™‚οΈ Tour de France - Grasmere stage - is a year away today!

We are very excited about next year. Some of these children say that they have ambitions to ride in the Tour de France one day. All of them are in cycling practice for future adventures.

Class 4 have had 'Bikeability' training this week. Thank you Cat and Nick. It was fantastic.

πŸš΄β€β™€οΈ 🚴 πŸš΄β€β™‚οΈ Several of Class 1 cycle to school, and others scoot. Here are some of these superb early years cyclists, joining their older friends.

Tour de France, we're ready to support!

πŸ’¦πŸ’¦πŸ’¦ These children have just been on a residential, and they are currently looking very proud of themselves and a little bit tired! But here they are in the beck, full of frolics and fun.

This is such a skilled job. The precision and focus required is well beyond most of us (or is that just me?). Such teamwork, too! We're all watching tennis and football at the moment... Well, here is another way of training your body to perform at a superlative level. Less glamorous maybe, but what a satisfying result every time. Well done, these impressive young men from Gordon Graham.

πŸ’¦πŸ’¦πŸ’¦ The beginnings of confidence in the water...

The beck is really shallow here, but the stones are wobbly and slippery, and who knows what creatures might be around your toes.

Here are our youngest children learning how to move around safely in the water, and thoroughly enjoying it.

🌳🌳🌳 A lot of den building goes on during playtimes... Now that the birds have finished nesting, Will Hicks has trimmed the hedge, and we have lots of lovely fresh 'roofing material' for our dens. Some of them have comfy 'beds' inside.

🌑️ Well, in the cooler air of Saturday morning, it's easy to see why people still sweltering in hotter areas might find this picture of our fortunate children very refreshing. Looking out at our local campsite this morning, I can see that lots of people have come to enjoy the waters of the Lake District. The beck was busy last night!

πŸ›Ÿ It is so important that our children can keep themselves safe in and around water. This is how that starts - helping them to assess the risks, learning about cold water shock, slippery stones, sudden depth changes, variable currents etc.

πŸŠβ€β™€οΈ The 'float to live' videos available on line are brilliant at teaching the steps to follow. But as with any learning, it's the practising that makes it real. If you've just heard something, you can't remember it under pressure. If you've done it once, you'll remember the gist. If you've practised repeatedly, you know you can do it, and so your stress levels can drop enough for you to actually do it effectively, in a properly dangerous scenario. So we do grab every opportunity to make sure that the children are learning how to be deeply comfortable in the water, and able to have lots of glorious safe fun. πŸ’¦πŸ’¦πŸ’¦
