West Grantham CofE Primary Academy

At the end of last term, the Reception children had a wonderful time visiting Belton House to consolidate their learning in Term 5. The excitement began in the minibus with the children noticing different types of transport and features of the local environment that were new or that they recognised.

At Belton House the children loved exploring the grounds including the conservatory, church, maze and adventure playground. We all had a fantastic time and some lovely memories have been made.

No Pens Day and National Numeracy Day

We had a fun filled morning completing activities related to No Pens and National Numeracy Day on 20 May 2026. We used our problem-solving skills, played ‘Would you rather?’ with Mr Moneyjar, presented our WANTED posters to the class, played ‘Find it first’ to practise our dictionary skills and finished off with showing our understanding of symmetry using objects from around the classroom.

What an amazing school trip to Belton House! We had so much fun whilst consolidating our science and geography learning. We saw bees pollinating flowers, we also saw seed dispersal in action by blowing dandelion clocks and having sticky plants stick to us as we walked by.

We found and classified lots of animals including the most beautifully coloured deer. There was some amazing mapping skills on display where the children were using a map and compass to successfully get us to our next location. We finished off with an energetic time in the adventure park.

WGPA have been working closely with to develop the love for and delivery of cricket within our school. We have received some amazing lessons and CPD from the Lincolnshire Cricket team. As a result of our engagement, we were selected as their 'School of the Term' and received a certificate and a £500 kit bag!!

Today Y3&4 were treated to a virtual author visit with Bethany Walker. Bethany was inspired to become an author when she was reading books to her own children and has a love of Greek myths and legends. She showed us her book about the character Medusa in her story Medusa Gorgon’s Bad Hair Day. She explained that it takes almost a year to write a book and talked us through the stages including illustrations. Next, we had a draw-along session where we created our own Medusa illustrations which I think look fantastic.

Yesterday (Thursday), a group of 8 children from years 3 and 4 attending a cricket skills session at Grantham Cricket Club. They played numerous games designed to improve their batting, bowling and fielding. Everyone had a great time (even though we had to shelter from the rain for a short time!).

Last week, in Art, we took inspiration from our focus artist Adam Hale. He creates collages using heads of people layered with clippings of newspapers and magazines he finds on the London Underground. Each picture tells a different story. I think you will agree that the children had a good attempt at creating their own images.

Last week, in reading, we found out that the main character 'Alex Rider'
had a tough decision to make. Does he stay and be a spy at the training camp or leave to live in an institution away from all of his current friends? We split into class teams to argue our points by creating a Conscious Alley. Team 3/4A were crowned the winners by Mrs Coverley who walked the alley listening to all the ideas.

Eight enthusiastic pupils represented WGPA at the KS1 Cricket Festival, showing brilliant teamwork, energy and ambition throughout the day. They threw themselves into every activity, celebrated each other’s successes and demonstrated real progress in their cricket skills. It was a fantastic experience that left them buzzing with confidence and pride. - Mr Kitchen

Yesterday, in science, we were given a collection of animal pictures and asked how we would classify them. Once we had done this using a Venn diagram (another excuse to write on the desks. Ooopps sorry Mrs Smyth), we learnt the difference between vertebrates and invertebrates. We then classified vertebrates into the 5 different categories of mammals, fish, amphibians, reptiles and birds. At the very end of the lesson, we played 20 questions. Using our science knowledge we had to try and guess the animal by asking up to 20 questions that could only have a yes or no answer. There was some very successful classifying happening in the classroom today.
