"We might not be able to convince everyone but each parent can decide from their own experience by comparing how their child feels at nursery and at their childminders. It’s every parents choice to make their own individual decision.
I’ve noticed school teachers choose childminders over nurseries. The nurturing environment really helps younger children to feel involved and brings on their learning.
The learning children are required to do before starting school includes counting to 10, filling in missing numbers, making patterns and marks using a pencil, knowing colours and how they mix, understanding how they fit into the community, learning to share and making friends. If they know more then they can become bored at school.
Childminders have the same standards as a nurseries do. The same guidelines are adhered to such as Curriculum for Excellence, GIRFEC, SHANARRI, Building the Ambition and the Health and Social Care Standards.
If you ask the Care Inspectorate you will discover childminders are consistently achieving higher grades than nurseries. This proves that children’s well being and individual needs are a greater focus. Not surprising as the number of adults per children is 1 to 10 in nurseries and its 1 to 3 for childminders. Having a carer who has more time to care is far more attractive.
I guess its going to be hard to change and realise that childminders offer equal if not more than nurseries because it’s been a tradition for many many years now.
When my sisters children were at nursery 10 years ago she didn’t obsess about them going every day as they were missing out on going with their mum and meeting up with friends to visit fun places like animal farms, walks, parks, river play, picnics, exploring, baking, relaxing or just doing what they felt like on the day.
Children will be in school for 6 hours each day until they’re 16 so there’s no rush to getting them packed away for 30 hours a week every week at age 3. It’s way too long. Children at age 3 and 4 still need to feel loved and in a nurturing environment".
