This is my story 💭
I didn’t go back after maternity leave not because I didn’t love my job, but because I didn’t love what it was costing me.
Time.

🫣 The message every beauty therapist dreads , “I’ve had a reaction!” Here’s what to do next!
Let’s talk about allergic reactions in the salon 👀
This happened to me last week, one of my regular clients, who’s been having lash lifts for years, had a reaction. Her eye swelled up and became irritated… definitely a reaction!
So, even the most experienced therapists can still have client reactions, and that’s okay. What’s most important is how you handle it when it happens. 💡
Here are my top tips for dealing with a client allergic reaction (because let’s be honest, it’s probably going to happen at some point in your career):
1️⃣ Don’t panic!
That first message and photo can make your heart drop, but stay calm. Reassure your client and look at the facts. Did you follow the correct process? Patch test? Timings? Product placement?
2️⃣ Ask questions.
Check what’s changed since you last saw them, any new medication, skincare, or aftercare steps? You’d be surprised how often the cause is something simple, like a client going on a sunbed straight after waxing!
3️⃣ Give clear advice.
Recommend a cold compress, no makeup or skincare on the area, avoid touching it, and possibly an antihistamine. Remember, we’re not medically trained, always advise them to seek medical attention if needed.
4️⃣ Plan for next time.
Try to identify the cause. In my client’s case, we used a different eye makeup remover, and that likely triggered the reaction when the lifting solution went on. Always re–patch test at least 48 hours before their next treatment.
5️⃣ Keep communication open.
Check in to see if the reaction is improving. Your client will appreciate your care and professionalism and it helps maintain their confidence in you.
Reactions can happen to anyone, even with regular clients and trusted products. What matters is how you respond 💕
