SL Guitar Lessons has been teaching guitar lessons for over half a decade and throughout this time have had great feedback from our students. Tune before you play

It takes less than a minute and gives you a reliable starting point. If the guitar is out of tune, even correct playing can sound wrong.

A lot of guitar problems become simpler once you narrow down what is actually going wrong.

The aim is not to squeeze more guitar into the week for the sake of it. It is to make the time you already have a bit more useful.

I have tried to keep the online lessons straightforward: a clear route through the material, without needing the same free slot in the diary every week.

Pick getting caught in the strings?Too much pick may be sticking out, or you may be pushing too far through the strings....

Too much pick may be sticking out, or you may be pushing too far through the strings.

This comes up quite a lot in lessons.

Show less of the pick and use a lighter movement. Let the tip pass across the string rather than digging underneath it.

Try the adjustment slowly, listen to what changes, and only then put it back into the song or exercise.

Slow is still practice

Playing slowly gives your hands time to learn the movement properly. Speed can come later.

This is one of those small things that can make practice much easier. The useful part is making the idea practical. Pick one small thing you can actually work on today rather than turning practice into a list of everything you cannot do yet.

A short session with a clear purpose is still a useful session.

A low-energy session can still be useful.

One thing I try to avoid with students is making a simple problem feel bigger than it is.

On tired days, try: • chord shapes • note finding • slow changes • listening and counting • tuning practice.

Ten useful minutes beats 45 minutes of annoyed noodling.

Your only job today: ✓ pick the guitar up ✓ do one small task ✓ stop before you hate it.

You do not need to fix everything in one session. Pick the part that is getting in the way, give it a few focused minutes, then put it back into the music.

You may be building each chord one finger at a time every time you move.

One thing I try to avoid with students is making a simple problem feel bigger than it is.

Practise the two chord shapes as a pair. Move slowly and try to make the fingers travel together.

Try the adjustment slowly, listen to what changes, and only then put it back into the song or exercise.

Slower can be faster

Rushing through mistakes just teaches your hands to repeat them.

A lot of guitar problems become simpler once you narrow down what is actually going wrong.

Play slowly enough that you can notice: ✓ finger movement ✓ timing ✓ unwanted noise ✓ tension.

Controlled first. Speed can be invited back later.

Only move faster when you can play it accurately 3 times in a row. Then add a small amount of speed, not a heroic leap.

You do not need to fix everything in one session. Pick the part that is getting in the way, give it a few focused minutes, then put it back into the music.
