Too true. We’ll get there. Stay safe everybody 🤙

Allow me to me paint a little picture.

It’s 8.50pm. The band and I are crammed in the dressing room, a cramped hive humming with anticipation. There’s not really enough room for us all, but everyone made their little nest with their day-bag and jacket and laptop earlier in the day, and we’ve all got pretty good at changing in confined spaces. The stage shirts don’t smell great, but tomorrow is laundry day, so we deal with slipping into their stiff creases one more time. People are ending text conversations with their loved ones, doing stretches, warming up tired voices, scanning the setlist. Ali swings by to check on that - I changed something in the running order last minute and she needs to tweak the lights. Dougie and Cahir are line-checking onstage, making sure all the microphones and instruments are doing what they’re supposed to do. Tre is hammering on her laptop in the office, already managing the tour a few days ahead. I can hear Johnny and Luke chatting through the in-ear monitors, making jokes only we can hear. Jamie texts me from merch to make sure the guy who’s telling him I said he could have a free shirt really is a friend of mine, not a chancer. I start putting the small tasks of the day to one side to focus on the next two hours.

I had a good day. I woke up at a reasonable hour, wasn’t hungover. Wandered away from the bus as the crew got busy setting up to find a coffee shop I remember from last time I was here for breakfast, trying to recall the local words for “thank you”. I texted a friend whose floor I used to sleep on years ago and arranged to meet up for dinner. I did some interviews, remembered one of the journalists from last time, caught up. My manager called to talk about touring plans for later in the year. My agent emailed to say we got some great festival slots confirmed for the summer. We cracked jokes and ran old songs for fun in soundcheck, tweaking the setlist for local considerations. I ran into some folks coming to the show and said hi, hugged, took a selfie or two.

Those people are out front now, and I can hear them, somewhere in the midst of the low roar. Dougie comes by and says it’s time to go. We high five, and start the short walk to the wings, buzzing now. No matter how many times we do this it’s still a privilege, a rush, the only thing in this world I’m confident I’m good at. Who knows what will happen in the next 120 minutes? The only thing I know for sure is we’ll give it everything, make a connection, end up sweaty, drained and hoarse, and do it all again tomorrow, somewhere else.

All this is gone right now, buried, erased. I have no idea when it will be back. Soon I hope. Today, though, I’m grieving a little for that life. I miss it more than words could ever say.
