It’s that time of year again when mini eggs are lining the supermarket shelves. But, did you know that, just like grapes, they are the perfect size to block a small child’s airway and choke them? And, their hard shell can make it difficult to dislodge with standard first aid techniques.

With whole grapes we advise cutting them in half lengthways and ideally into quarters to create thin strips. But chopping up mini eggs isn’t as easy. So, what can you do?

1. Hide them from the children and eat them yourself – good luck with that!

2. Break them into small pieces with a rolling pin. Or, crush them in a pestle and mortar. Or melt them a little first.

3. Opt for a different treat. Larger, hollow eggs are much safer for little ones.

We are happy to announce we have spaces in May for 1 full time child., In September we will have spaces for 3 more.
Spoonbill is a small family friendly nursery offering care to our service families as well as our community.
We offer the 15 and 30 hour funding.
Our curriculum is based around the child and looking at giving them all the building blocks they need to further their growth.
We encourage imaginative play and use loose parts and heuristic play to encourage this.
Our sleep room has cots and sleep mats to cover all ages and stages.
Lunches we all sit either at the table or in high chairs together, and the staff eat with the children to make it more like home, as well as modelling how to sit and behave and talk to our friends at the table.
We are graded Good by Ofsted and have a 5 food hygiene rating.
Most importantly for us is the strong bonds we have with our children and families which is seen by the actions of the children and how they play and settle into our Spoonbill Family.
We use Famly to keep in touch with our parents and let them see their children's learning and progression at Spoonbill.

Just a reminder of the dangers of mini eggs to our smaller Spoonbill Family members.

Mini eggs of all colours and brands are lining the supermarket shelves. But, did you know that they are the perfect size to block a small child’s airway and choke them? And, their hard shell can make it difficult to dislodge with standard first aid techniques.

That’s why they carry a safety warning that they aren’t recommended for children under 4.

So, when you’re stocking up for the Easter Bunny please stay safe and choose another treat for your little one.

We have been exploring metal objects after some pasta play. The children have all explored the chain and how it feels, moves and sounds. They moved it all over the setting seeing how the noise changed from the hard floor and the carpet.

If you have any small chains of different sizes please could we have them to extend the children’s learning.

Thank you The Spoonbill Family. X

Music helps babies and children learn 09/02/2026

At Spoonbill we love singing and dancing. Not only are we building up their vocabulary we are working on their core muscles. Some of the children will bring us the books that have songs in to tell us they want to sing or others will just start to sing. We use the instruments that are out or we make ones ourselves to join in with the singing or music. We also do scarf dancing with them which is great fun outside if there is some wind.
See below some ideas about music and singing with your little one.

Today they have been exploring a new texture high bran and using some new and some old items. We introduced the high bran and they explored how it felt in their hands and what they could do with it using the equipment. They had spoons and the cups which they were familiar with and we introduced the pastry brush, the whisk and the different size measuring cups. They explored the pastry brush and the feel of the silicone using their fingers, and tried to use it like a spoon. We modelled how to use the brush and will continue to while they gain understanding and confidence using it. They used the scoops to fill up the cups. We talked about the feel of the bran, the sizes of the cups, bigger, smaller, in and out.
