The children have been learning about capacity. Whilst filling, tipping, emptying, stacking, gathering and grouping the children have been exploring what happens when they use the sand in the various pots and containers. The children were observing similarities and differences and experimenting what would happen if they filled smaller pots and filled larger ones.
Lots of questions were asked like "How does it feel?" and "Why does it feel heavy/light?" and "Is it the same or different?" "Is it heavier or lighter?"
The children played with this activity all afternoon and it is strengthening their mathematical language and understanding, social skills and fine motor skills.

The weather has taken a drastic change today, but we don't care! What fun the children have had today in the rain. We have sung lots of songs involving the weather and the children have been splashing, jumping and running in and through the puddles. This seemingly ordinary activity helps to strengthen the children's social skills, speech & language, physical and gross motor skills.

Today is the last day of term.
Everyone at Rascals would like to thank you for all of our lovely thoughtful gifts and cards we received over this last week. It means so much to us and it is an absolute pleasure to be a part of your child's journey.
Have an amazing summer and for those whose children start 'big' school the next part of their story is just beginning (and don't miss us too much! lol).
We look forward to seeing you back on the Thursday 3rd September.

We have had a productive and exciting day in the nursery garden. A few weeks ago the children helped plant a potato that could no longer be eaten and each week the children have been noticing its growth. Today the children helped 'harvest' any potatoes that may have grown. The children made predictions as to whether there were any potatoes and then guessed how many there might be. The children showed good patience whilst taking turns to look through the roots of the plant. The children were incredibly excited to see that some potatoes had indeed grown. We spoke about farmers growing potatoes and some people with allotments and where we buy our potatoes from and what other vegetables can be grown in pots or in the ground. This simple but amazing activity allows the children to visually process where some of their comes from and how it grows whilst observing changes to the plant as it grows, giving them an understanding of the world around them.

There's nothing better than having fun in the sun and we love to hear the children laughing and learning whilst they do. There was a lovely sea breeze allowing us to spend a little more time outside and the children decided to start transporting the water from a tray to the water wall and then into a tuff tray situated on the floor.
"Can I sit in the water?" asked one child. "Of course!" was our response.
"I need a float." said a child, and we were explaining the water is too shallow and she would need to be in deeper water to use a float.
"It tickles!" another child said describing how the water felt being poured on her back.
"That waters cold and this waters warm." said another child. "Why is that? The water is from the same hose." "Cos it's in the sun!" she answers correctly.
"Lets wrap 'H' up" as some of the older children help the younger children to get dry with a towel.
This kind of activity is not just about having fun it is about the children learning how to work together or compromise, ask for help and follow instructions. All the skills they need to grow into confident, kind, helpful and patient children.
